Job Description:

Verisign enables the security, stability, and resiliency of key internet infrastructure and services, including providing root zone maintainer services, operating two of the 13 global internet root servers, and providing registration services and authoritative resolution for the .com and .net top-level domains, which support the majority of global e-commerce.

Verisign is looking for a Principal Data Center Engineer to join our Global Data Center Operations Team. This role will be a top advisor to the Head of Global Data Center Operations and drive the overall strategy, design, commissioning, and oversight for critical electrical, mechanical, fire/life safety systems within Verisign owned and/or leased data center facilities. The candidate will have strategic oversight over preventative maintenance efforts and emergency operations, including SOP, MOP, and EOP development. The Principal Data Center Engineer will serve as a consultant to our Critical Facility Lead Engineers, and our Network/Systems Architecture teams, in order to promote the optimal use of data center infrastructure and drive efficiencies across the gray/white space.

The ideal candidate will have a strong design background in data center critical facilities and operations, a keen eye for identifying single points of failure, and a passion for designing highly available systems. The candidate will be responsible for interfacing directly with key business leaders across many disciplines including Legal, Finance, and Technology.

Responsibilities:


  • Ensure all electrical, mechanical, fire/life safety equipment supporting the data centers are operating at peak efficiency and are highly available
  • Identify Single Points of Failures (SPOF) within existing design/architecture and drive prioritization/remediation efforts with facility engineers
  • Provide design, commissioning oversight and consulting expertise for both the critical facilities and whitespace environment with the mindset to provide reliability, energy efficiency, sustainable designs
  • Drive preventative maintenance best practices and oversight through the use of Method of Procedures (MOP)
  • Develop Emergency Operating Procedures (EOP) and emergency response oversight, including implementing a training program
  • Identify root cause of system failures
  • Oversee complex end of life and capacity/growth critical facilities projects
  • Work with Data Center Site Managers to implement key programs
  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement across three key verticals: Safety, Security, and Availability
  • Build business cases to support our global growth strategy, including financial projections, capacity management, and market trend analysis
  • Travel to potential expansion locations to conduct physical site analysis and design consultation

Requirements:

  • 15+ years relevant experience
  • Demonstrated expertise of the data center tier rating systems and design risk factors for resiliency and availability
  • Direct experience with design, engineering, commissioning, and operations of data center electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment
  • Experience reviewing technical drawings to ensure installations and designs conform to industry best practices and standards
  • Experience with Electrical Power Management Systems (EPMS) and Building Management Software (BMS), including monitoring
  • Experience overseeing design and deployment of large-scale data center environments, including whitespace design
  • Existing data center service vendor relationships
  • Mechanical, Electrical, or other related Engineering degree and/or relevant job experience
  • Relevant industry certifications (NFPA, ATS, ATO, AOS, DCDC, etc)
  • The ability to potentially travel 25% of the time
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present to technical and non-technical senior executives
  • Professional Engineer License desired
