At the nonprofit Urban Institute, we believe in the power of evidence to improve lives and strengthen communities.  Our employees are empowered to open minds, shape decisions and offer solutions.  We encourage intellectual honesty, innovation, diversity, and mutual respect, and our analysis elevates the debate, wherever it takes place.

Urban’s greatest asset is our people. We strive to attract and cultivate a vibrant, creative, and diverse community.  Our employees drive Urban’s mission through entrepreneurship, innovation, leadership, effective communication, results-orientation, and relationship cultivation.  Our success depends on engaging individuals who possess and value these attributes.

How you’ll contribute:

The Development Manager will report to and work closely with the Vice President, Philanthropic Partnerships to help oversee the day-to-day operations and management of fundraising for complex cross-disciplinary research and policy initiatives that provide actionable insights and guidance to policy makers, practitioners, and philanthropic partners.

The Development Manager will be a skilled team player who collaborates regularly with other Development team members, research and policy leaders from across the institute, and members of Urban’s Executive and Communications teams.

Responsibilities include:

  • Working with research teams, senior leaders, and the executive team to develop funder cultivation and stewardship plans, and to support the design and development of new funding opportunities.

  • Partnering with the communications team to develop and disseminate a suite of materials specifically designed with a funder audience in mind that share information about Urban’s priorities, products, and impact.

  • Building Urban’s fundraising capacity across the Institute by providing hands-on training and mentorship to early-career research staff interested in bolstering their fundraising skills.

  • Collaborating with colleagues from across the Development team to develop and draft team-wide strategy memos, presentations, leadership briefs, and other documents.

  • Managing Development relationships across multiple Urban offices and serving as a steward of Urban-wide processes and procedures.

  • Facilitating team-wide collaboration and identifying opportunities for cross-team efforts.

  • Supporting the management of key funder relationships and helping drive strategy and coordination for funder-related travel, meetings, and engagements.

What you’ll bring:

We are seeking a candidate with strong skills in writing, teamwork and collaboration, organization, and project management. Successful candidates will have an interest in public policy and an ability to bring diverse stakeholders together to develop and execute on shared goals, and will thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced work environment.

The successful applicant must have:

  • Bachelor's degree

  • At least five years of relevant professional experience or equivalent

  • A desire to work collaboratively and an interest in co-developing processes and solutions

  • Demonstrated project management and organizational skills, with the ability to develop and manage detailed workplans

  • An ability to synthesize and consolidate materials from multiple teams into effective, cohesive products

  • The ability to draft compelling briefs, memos, proposals, presentation materials, and other materials for a range of audiences

  • The ability to use good judgment to prioritize tasks while responding to quick turn-around requests under tight deadlines

  • Experience with planning and helping to execute effective meetings of diverse stakeholders

  • Strong interpersonal skills with experience managing cross-organization projects and working in team environments

  • An interest in and a desire to support the mission of the Urban Institute

What you’ll experience:

Working in the nation’s capital - the epicenter of public policy - among a network of policy experts, you can expect to have an impact on policy areas you care about and work with great colleagues who are smart, mission-driven, and collaborative. You will blend academic rigor with on-the-ground collaboration, be encouraged and supported to fulfill your potential through meaningful work that matters and, enjoy a welcoming workplace free from harassment, discrimination and intolerance.

In addition, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes: medical, dental, disability, and life insurance coverage. Competitive paid time off allowance, and eligibility to participate in a generous retirement savings plan plus elect a pretax benefit for commuting expenses.
