General Summary

Gas Technology Institute (GTI), the nation’s leading research, development, deployment, and training organization serving energy markets, has an opportunity for an experienced engineer in our Hydrogen Technology Center.  The qualified candidate will act as a senior engineer and project manager - leading technical, hands-on efforts in hydrogen production, storage, and large- scale technology demonstrations and/or pilots.


This unit performs cross-cutting research, product development, and demonstration projects, focused on clean hydrogen production, storage, delivery, and use – with a particular focus on technology-based solutions that increase optionality, affordability, and resiliency of integrated low carbon energy systems.


 
Primary Responsibilities

  • Leads engineering efforts in the design, development, and testing of existing and new hydrogen production technologies such as reforming, pyrolysis, thermochemical processes as well as electrolysis. 

  • Facilitates and performs large-scale pilot and field demonstration projects.

  • Supports R&D and engineering of hydrogen systems that include storage delivery and end use.

  • Leads or supports programmatic and project management tasks, including project scoping, customer interactions and presentations, budget, schedule and contracts management, and documentation with written reports.

  • Manages and communicates complex technical and applied research.  Strong experience and technical background in core research areas is essential.

  • Collaborates with researchers on all aspects of research and development proposals such as objective or purpose of project, applications that can be utilized from findings, costs of project, equipment, and human resource requirements.

  • Facilitates collaborations with academia, government, and corporations, including coordination with intellectual property-, Legal and Technology Licensing functions.

 Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including writing and delivering technical proposals, reports, and presentations

  • Demonstrated ability to build consensus across diverse research teams and clients

  • Ability to contribute and lead/manage large-scale, multi-year RD&D initiatives supporting technology and information development

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver polished products with high customer satisfaction

  • Knowledgeable of blended gas and hydrogen regulations, safety procedures, operating best practices, and related codes & standards

  • Work with current and prospective clients to understand their needs, and identify new technical and/or business areas of activity

  • Potential for travel for industry events, customer site visits, field demonstrations or testing.

 
Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering or Science; ten or more years in related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Prior work experience in energy industry R&D or operations is desired (e.g., in emerging low-carbon fuels such as ammonia or biofuels)

  • Experience in large-scale pilot demonstrations and field research experience is a plus

  • Project management experience preferred
