Ashland has an exciting opportunity for an EHS Specialist to join our Ashland LLC business at our Merry Hill, NC location. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the EHS function. This position will report to the EHS Director.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Develop, maintain, and implement programs to generate awareness, promote a safety culture, and reduce overall environmental and safety risk of the facilities.

  • Maintain Safety committee participation and discussions, reporting improvements and progress to all employees.

  • Conduct internal safety audits and inspections in accordance with all government and company regulations.

  • Manage Contractor safety programs and ensure all vendors are in compliance with Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations.

  • Ensure the facilities are in compliance with all Federal, State, and Local environmental and safety regulations.

  • Assist in all government inspections, and third party audits, etc. and lead when needed.

  • Manage all OSHA Process Safety Management elements.

  • Conduct Process Hazard Analysis and Root Cause Analysis.

  • In depth knowledge of Mechanical Integrity requirements under the OSHA PSM regulation, and maintaining equipment in accordance with good engineering practices.

  • Develop and conduct any required training for employees, and supervisors.

  • Assist in managing and operation of the on-site wastewater treatment facility and spray irrigation fields.

  • Assist in new project development ensuring that all aspects of environmental, health, and safety have been addressed or mitigated prior to implementation.

  • Conducts leak monitoring in compliance with EPA Leak Detection and Repair rules.

  • Manage work permits for high hazard work including but not limited to Lockout Tagout, Hot Work, Confined Space Entry, and Line Breaking.

In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:


  • Bachelors’ degree in Engineering/Science or similar field.

  • Solid working knowledge of general OSHA requirements, OSHA PSM regulation, as well as inspection, testing, and preventative maintenance requirements.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Proficient in the use of computers and typical office applications.

  • Ability to work with individuals and teams to drive company initiatives.

  • Organized and able to prioritize work.

  • Able to work independently in order to manage tasks to meet all requirements

  • Knowledge of water chemistry and capable of managing cooling towers and boiler water chemistry, with the assistance of a contractor.

  • History of strong attendance and performance.

  • Ability to coach and be coached.

  • Ability to be safe, innovative, flexible, self-starting, honest and open.

  • Ability to identify potential issues and formulate action plans, develop and foster a positive work environment, and resolve conflicts through problem resolution skills.
