Lab Aide 2 - NIPT at Illumina, Inc.

Job Description:

Shift: 9am - 530pm (includes Saturdays with a day off in the week)

Position Summary:

The Lab Aide (LA), also known as Accessioner, is responsible for receiving, recording and processing all inbound clinical laboratory samples for testing. They are also responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment and following the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling, receipt and data entry into the laboratory information management system (LIMS). This is an essential role that requires attention to detail and the ability to focus in an environment that may have background noise and activity. The job involves handling and working with potentially hazardous materials in a laboratory setting.

Responsibilities:


  • Responsible for the receipt, recording and processing of all clinical laboratory samples for testing

  • Responsible for performing work safely and applying all relevant protocols to his/her work, as well as adhering to Illumina safety culture

  • Takes responsibility and ownership for timely and quality completion of work

  • Highly productive/efficient/effective in the lab

  • Detail-oriented, time-organized and ensures completion of tasks

  • Ability to perform functions accurately

  • Ability to work independently and within teams

  • Be able to recognize when to escalate issues encountered in the lab

  • Works to overcome obstacles to completing tasks or assignments

  • Ability to network, develop good interdepartmental communication skills and interact effectively across groups

  • Works effectively in team environment and shares credit for successes; is receptive to ideas and feedback from others

  • Ability to clearly communicate WIP to next shift

  • Able to communicate issues with equipment and safety via ticketing systems

  • Responsible for completing all required trainings and competencies on time

  • Takes a multi-disciplinary approach to problem-solving

  • Able to contribute in investigation and resolution of technical problems

  • Strong ability and knowledge of process to be able to troubleshoot

  • Understands the internal activity (IA) process and can resolve sample issues

  • Acts as an ambassador for health and safety in the laboratory environment

  • Responsible for training new personnel

Requirements:


  • Typically requires equivalent work experience

  • High school diploma

  • Work experience preferences: LA2 – 1 year of laboratory experience or accessioning is required; related work experience recommended

  • Must be comfortable with the handling and processing of blood samples

  • Ability to read, understand, and comply with detailed procedures that ensure the safety of all

  • Must be flexible to work different shifts, such as Saturdays and evenings

  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently, following detailed work instructions, and as part of a cohesive team that together completes daily sample intake and processing in a timely manner

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize duties to meet timelines

  • Excellent communication, organizational and time management skills are essential

  • Detail-oriented and conscientious

  • Typically requires equivalent work experience, and/or on-the-job training and a minimum of 1 year of laboratory or accessioning experience is required
