Job Description:

Position Summary:

The Pre-analytical Lab Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of non-licensed laboratory staff and the pre-analytical processes, which includes accessioning, histology send-outs and plasma preparation. They are also responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment and following the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling, receipt, and data entry into the laboratory information management system (LIMS). The Pre-analytical Lab Supervisor will act as a liaison between the analytical laboratory and various other functional groups including but not limited to Customer Service & Support (CSS), Process Engineering Support Team (PEST), Supply Chain Management (SCM) Software and Development.

Responsibilities:


  • Identification of training needs and assuring each direct report receives regular training and education appropriate for the type of the laboratory services performed.

  • Communicate professionally and effectively with both internal and external personnel.

  • Supports various interdepartmental personnel and activities as assigned.

  • Provide guidance to accessioning team members through thorough knowledge and understanding of the process.

  • Expected to be a role model of work performance and attitude for accessioning team.

  • Resolution of technical problems and ensuring that appropriate remedial actions are enacted whenever test systems deviate from the laboratories established protocols.

  • Evaluation of the competency of non-licensed personnel and assuring that staff maintains their competency to perform procedures.

  • Evaluating and documenting the performance of individuals on a quarterly basis.

  • Maintain competency for all accessioning processes.

  • Ensure that training and competency documentation is completed, reviewed, and filed.

  • Maintain and organize inventory of laboratory equipment and supplies in pre-analytical areas.

  • Assist other supervisors with cleaning and organizing common areas in the laboratory, including benches, refrigerators, and freezers.

  • Handle EH&S (e.g., lab safety training, hazardous waste disposal) and Facilities (e.g., equipment move) related tasks.

Requirements:


  • Bachelor of Arts or Science in biological sciences, laboratory science or related field preferred.

  • Minimum of 4 years of laboratory experience with 2 years of molecular biology experience; previous industry experience in a clinical laboratory is preferred.

  • Experience in handling and processing blood samples is required. Experience with formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tumor tissues blocks and slides is recommended.

  • Experience with data entry and accessioning with Laboratory Management Systems (LIMS) is preferred.

  • Experience with Quality Systems including document revision and nonconformance reporting is preferred.

  • Ability to read, understand, and comply with detailed procedures that ensure the safety of all.

  • Must be flexible to work different shifts, such as Saturdays and evenings

  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently, following detailed work instructions, and as part of a cohesive team that together completes daily sample intake and processing in a timely manner.

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize duties to meet timelines.

  • Excellent communication, organizational and time management skills are essential.

  • Detail-oriented and conscientious.
