Manager - Alternative Asset Services at Northern Trust

Job Description:


Manages the Alternative Investments Operations / function, providing leadership and guidance to subordinate managers. Overall accountability for the performance management process ensures resources are available to accomplish priorities. Key decision-maker for the salary review process for the teams. Participates in developing division strategic plan and sets goals and priorities based on the direction set for the unit; follows through to ensure that objectives are met. Coaching and Developing first line managers (TL's).

Overall Competencies Required:

General

• Monitor team goals as measured against team KPIs

• Identify process failures and improve quality percentages

• Liaise with global teams to manage transitions of tasks and revise SLAs

• Improve on past performance through systems development and continuous training

• Ensure consistent best practices are being followed within the teams

• Implement process controls as needed

• Ensure that adequate training and cross training is provided for all partners

• Identify training and development needs and establish performance standards

• Prepare and present monthly performance metrics and reporting

Core

• Maintain effective communication channels at all levels

• Ensure strict compliance with risk and other regulatory requirements

• Assist with Audit requirements and Business Continuity planning

• Collaborate and actively participate with global management on projects and initiatives

• Participate in Department events and forums

• Act as a role model for junior partners and peers.

Partners

• Monitor staffing needs and engage in the interview and hiring processes

• Engage with partners regularly including team, direct report and junior staff

• Ensure that performance documents and process is completed within corporate timeframes and guidelines

• Identify training and development needs as well as potential performance issues

• Ensure that all company mandated and team specific training is completed as needed or mandated by corporate policy

• Mentor and develop talent within the teams/directs.

Minimum Requirements:

• Thorough knowledge of Alternative Asset Services and Capital market.

• Familiar with AAS Products and business model.

• Expertise in handling client calls, external calls with Clients or 3rd party Fund Managers.

• Client servicing/facing exposure with experience in dealing with internal and external clients independently.

• In-depth Functional / Industry Knowledge is required

• Highly flexible and adaptable to change

Qualifications:

Required A College or University degree and/or relevant proven work experience is required. People manager experience of 6+ years and overall industry experience of 10+ years. Preferred experience in the management of a Hedge Funds, Fund Administration, Fund Accounting, or related discipline.

Skills:

• Influential, effective communication is required

• Ability to mentor through confidence and approachability

• Display a collaborative approach to problem solving, within and outside of Operations

• Good analytical, numerical and reasoning skills

• Excellent time management and delegation skills are needed

• Strong MS Office knowledge is required

• Propensity to quickly learn new systems and processes

• Thorough knowledge of relevant regulatory environment

• Experience managing Team leaders and junior partners

• Fostering innovation at BAU for better efficiency and quality.
