Brief Description: This position is responsible for the financial statements of insurance subsidiaries, handling both GAAP and STAT reporting. The senior accountant role will help ensure accuracy of the general ledger information and will assist in monthly analysis of financial results and key business drivers. In addition to monthly close and internal control activities, the position will assist in supporting the controllers group in accounting policy and related technical matters. 
 
Responsibilities:


  • Prepare GAAP and STAT journal entries. Assist in investigation of significant variances of various income statement accounts.

  • Review detailed reconciliations of balance sheet accounts and provide assistance in variance explanations.

  • Prepare STAT detailed income and balance sheet analysis by legal entity and provide variance explanation.

  • Prepare and general monthly preliminary statutory and GAAP general ledgers; prepare and generate for review with manager statutory and GAAP financial statements; participate in review discussions of the financial statements with Controller and CFO.

  • Provide documentation needed in support of external and regulatory auditors.

  • Provide assistance, support and training to less experienced personnel.

  • Serve as a backup for various functional areas within the division.

  • Comply with HIPAA, Diversity Principles, Corporate Integrity, Compliance Program policies and other applicable corporate and departmental policies.

  • Maintain complete confidentiality of company business.

  • Maintain communication with management regarding developments within areas of assigned responsibilities and perform special projects as required or requested.

  • Provide accounting guidance and support for potential acquisitions



Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting and 5 years’ experience in a similar role OR four years accounting experience in a similar role.

  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and statutory accounting theory and practice.

  • Analytical, problem solving and organizational skills.

  • Interpersonal skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Access applications.

  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills.
