Overview:

We are seeking a Mechanical/Reliability Engineer who will focus on the process improvements necessary to translate research tests into production operations occurring in high hazard remote locations such as hot cells, glove boxes and junior caves. This position resides in the Target Production and Infrastructure Development (TPID) group in the Radioisotope Science and Technology Division, Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). TPID uses unique facilities at ORNL including the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the Radiochemical Engineering Development Center (REDC), to enable the production of a variety of important radioisotopes, including plutonium-238 for deep-space exploration, californium-252 for industrial uses, and superheavy elements for scientific research and discovery.

Major Duties and Responsibilities


  • Develops FMEA processes for new or existing equipment

  • Plans out required testing and performance evaluation to assess potential risks to production and safety

  • Provides solutions to recurring failures by performingRCAand identifying corrective action

  • Performs statistical data analysis to predict and minimize failures using methods such as Weibull

  • Works with the maintenance teams to develop processes that increase reliability

  • Analyzes equipment and system Life Cycle data

  • Provide imaginative, thorough engineering solutions to a wide range of complex, ambiguous, and/or difficult problems.

  • Serve in professional societies and standards development committees

Basic Qualifications:


  • A Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering

  • 5 or more years of related experience is required. Work towards an applicable advanced degree may be applied towards up to 2 years of experience.

  • Demonstrated experience in the design, fabrication, and operation of complex electro-mechanical systems within process environments.

  • Experience in using probability and statistical tools and methods

  • Proven communication skills, including technical writing


Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience in an R&D or production, testing and schedule-driven environments

  • Machining and fabrication shop experience

  • Demonstration of design and process team experience as well as experience in process development and remote control

  • Manufacturing or fabrication environment quality experience, i.e., NQA-1

  • Experience in maintaining high levels of process documentation and quality control and assurance

  • Experience with solid modeling and design software packagesCertification in reliability engineering

DOE Security Clearance Requirement:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
