The Carpenter performs various tasks related to troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing buildings and building components on Marine Corps Base Quantico, including Camp Upshur.  Of particular importance is ability to repair and maintain aged military facilities including Quonset huts, trailers, and GP medium tents.

Summary:

The Journeyman Carpenter perform duties necessary to maintain in good repair building and

facilities comprised of wood, sheet-metal, concrete, stucco, and other materials used by the

construction industry normally defined as building materials used in the structural requirements

of a building using equipment and tools found within the structural trades to maintain building

structures including interior and exterior wall, doors, hallways, walkways, entrances, roofs,

sidings, ceilings. bins, cribs, counters, benches, partitions, flooring, signage, interior and exterior

doors both personnel and overhead, locks to include mechanical and electronic or other electrical

lock mechanisms, sheet metal work involving machine guards, grease pans, shelves, lockers,

tanks, ventilators, chutes, ducts, metal roofing and other sheet-metal equipment and fixtures.

Work involves most of the following: planning and laying out of work from sketches or blueprints, drawings, models, or verbal instructions, using a variety of structural hand tools, portable power tools and standard measuring instruments, and making standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work; and selecting materials necessary for the work.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  •  Performs maintenance as required on: Overhead doors, doors and locks (replacement and repair), sign changes and installations, masonry work, cement and concrete finishing,roofing.

  • The carpenter studies specifications; and measures, marks, and cuts boards, using patterns, templates, ruler, pencil, and hand and power saws.

  • Fastens or installs parts, using hammer, nailing machine, or power stapler.

  •  Repairs defects by replacing damaged parts. May fabricate, repair, modify, and replace woodwork.

  • May apply preservative to prolong wood, metal or other materials life.

  • May pack, seal, band, and apply markings as necessary.

  • Prepares floors by removing old surface covering such as carpet, tile or vinyl, stripping, patching, or cleaning the subsurface floor. Measures and cuts flooring to size, using trade tools.

  • Lays and places flooring on top of appropriate substrate. Cuts, trims, and stretches flooring material as necessary to ensure a quality fit along wall edges, openings, and projections.

  •  Installs edging and door strips or adds other decorative fixtures or applications.

  • Painting to include: Surface finishes and staining.

  • Installs drywall/sheetrock to include mud, tape and finish work.

  •  Interfaces with procurement team on materials as needed.

  • Possession of a valid state driver’s license.

  • Able to obtain access to MCB Quantico.

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

  • Five years minimum general carpentry.

  • Experience acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.

  • Facilities maintenance experience and knowledge of required work ranging in a variety of general maintenance and repairs.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with hands and knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and practices used in the field

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trades involved

  •  Demonstrated skill in the care and use of the tools and equipment in the trades involved.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand verbal description of technical work-related problems(i.e. drawings, floor plans, etc.)

  • Proficient in use of cell phone (including texting) and radio communication devices.
