Sr Mgr, Data Management Architect at The E.W. Scripps Company

Job Description:

Primary Purpose

Play a key role in visualizing, designing, and preparing a framework for use by the data engineers to ensure our business partners can fully utilize procured data.  Responsible for the health and availability of all things data in the organization including overseeing the production data environment, managing the relationship with our DBA’s, and managing the data engineering team.  Ensure that best practices are used to access and populate the data systems and to develop data processing strategies and implementing data processing tools that help meet the objectives of new or modified products and services.

Key Activities


  • Directly supervise, develop, coach, and ensure performance meets or exceeds expectations for software engineers

  • Development ongoing training for software engineers

  • Evaluate team performance metrics and develop plans, goals, and strategies to improve metrics.

  • Conduct data academy

  • Collaborate with senior leadership to guide enterprise data strategy.

  • Establish, communicate, and lead the adoption of data standards and best practices.

  • Gain strong understanding of all data processes and partner with business to create and enforce a database design

  • Review all processes for data management compliance prior to moving to production

  • Create and maintain documentation for standards in development

  • Design back-end database architecture and warehousing protocols

  • Ensure availability and business continuity of all production systems supported

  • Move processes from development to production following necessary protocols

  • Coordinate all aspects of system upgrades including but not limited to change management, communication, and testing oversight

  • Act as an escalation resource for all production related issues, including incident management, defects triage, root cause analysis, and resolution

  • Investigate and make recommendations on new tools to enhance our processes and procedures. 

  • Participate in vendor tool evaluations and proof of concept testing in lockstep with business partners

  • Ensure data and processes within systems is relevant and necessary.  Remove outdated data and processes following necessary protocol.

Skills

Education & Experience/Certifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, management information systems (MIS) or equivalent degree or work experience

  • 5+ years related experience in a database environment with data warehousing preferred

Skills & Abilities


  • Advanced Data Architecture skills and experience

  • Proven strategic planning, personnel management, and other project management skills

  • Excellent communication (both written and spoken) and managerial abilities in dealing with management, users, staff, peers, and vendors

  • Ability to relate technical matters to non-technical users and business matters to technical staff

  • Ability to develop and maintain good relationship to effectively handle escalations and manage communications with stakeholders

  • Highly disciplined individual, self-motivated, and delivery focused with ability to handle, organize, and prioritize multiple requests within tight deadlines and with limited oversight by supervisor
