OBJECTIVES/PURPOSE

The Computational Oncology team within Precision and Translational Medicine (PTM) organization leverages molecular and imaging non-clinical and real-world datasets to support Takeda Oncology’s discovery and translational efforts to develop transformative immuno-oncology therapies to cure cancer. We are looking for an experienced translational bioinformatics lead to contribute to our mission by integrating, analyzing and interpreting multi-modal data including single-cell omics, digital pathology and real-world evidence data. The candidate will have a comprehension of biology (with a focus on immunology, oncology, or immuno-oncology) and the ability to apply modern computational biology approaches to provide scientific insights. The candidate will be influential across the entire drug discovery spectrum, contributing to projects moving from target identification and validation through early clinical proof of concept, providing translational hypotheses and predictive and pharmacodynamic biomarkers to inform early clinical development strategies.

ACCOUNTABILITIES


  • Working with functional and program leadership, develop and implement a computational biology roadmap and strategies supporting early and late translational programs within the Precision and Translational Medicine (PTM) organization.

  • Analyze, visualize and interpret data types including genomics, transcriptomics, single cell sequencing, imaging, and other high-dimensional datasets from internal and public resources. Explore, develop and deploy state of the art tools for analysis of single-cell omics (RNAseq, CyTOF), digital pathology (IHC) and Spatial Transcriptomics data.

  • Perform integrative analyses to deduce, summarize and communicate results contributing to the understanding of drug indication, mechanism of action, identification of response predictors and biomarker hypothesis generation.

  • Establish a collaborative and influential role within discovery and translational project teams by working through the spectrum of experimental study design, assay selection, analysis, data integration and data interpretation.

  • Work collaboratively with data scientists and data engineering groups to enhance our computational infrastructure, user interface, data storage, query and visualization capabilities.

  • Prepare and present comprehensive technical or project reports to a full range of internal and external audiences.

  • Conduct scientific presentations to internal audiences and to external partnerships as indicated by projects and working with program leadership.

DIMENSIONS AND ASPECTS

Technical/Functional (Line) Expertise

  • Have strong scientific understanding of molecular biology and genomics.  Prior experience with immuno-oncology, oncology or immunology is preferred but not required.

  • Be experienced with genome scale or big data analysis derived from Next Generation Sequencing including some of the following: RNA-SEQ, DNA-SEQ, miRNA, copy number, epigenetics, and single cell sequencing.

  • Theoretical knowledge of bioinformatics, computational biology.  Keeps current with emerging trends in bioinformatics and computational biology.

  • Familiarity with popular public domain data sources and programmatic interfaces.

  • Have solid knowledge of Unix/Linux, command line interfaces, and fluency in some common scripting and/or programming language (e.g., R, Python, Perl, Java, C / C++).

  • Be familiar with parallel computing, relational databases (e.g., SQL) and cloud computing or distributed computing (i.e. AWS).

Leadership

  • Works with group and program leadership for assigned programs to help design and direct computational biology activities to meet program objectives; provide input on timelines and resource needs as indicated
  • Determines computational methods on assigned programs. Works with group leadership and manager to help ensure innovation from an assigned program can be effectively communicated with other computational biologists.

Decision-making and Autonomy

  • Responsible for prioritization and decision making around program support within group.

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Independent, self-starting and supportive of team-based research and able to work effectively in a matrix organization.

  • Conducts scientific presentations to internal audiences and to external partnerships as indicated by projects and working with program leadership

EDUCATION, BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS: 

  • Ph.D. in computational biology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, computer science, or similar discipline with 5+ years experience, or

  • M.S. with 8+ years of experience

  • Experience with oncology or immunology is preferred.
