PPG's Packaging Coatings business has an opportunity for a Development Chemist with the Polymer Synthesis Team, in Packaging Coatings Innovation Center, North America that is located in Milford, Ohio! PPG's Packaging Coatings business is a global leader for metal packaging coatings for multiple end uses in the beverage, food, and personal care industries, and we are committed to deliver safe, novel and breakthrough technologies to our customers. As a Development Chemist, you will be responsible for polymer development through hands-on laboratory experimentation that enables commercialization of various coating platforms. This includes synthesis of polymer resins, polymer characterization, transfer of the polymer from lab scale to commercial manufacturing, and production support and problem-solving. The role is expected to be able to operate autonomously with only general direction from a group or project leader, but also act efficiently as a team player.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a safe working environment and follow lab safety protocols by ensuring the safe operation of all equipment and chemical handling necessary, and confirm the proper safety equipment, procedures, and housekeeping are maintained in all areas.
  • Design and execute polymer experimental plan utilizing a variety of routine synthesis laboratory operations in a research setting. Follow polymer synthesis procedures, capture and analyze all data, and record detailed accounts of experimental process and results in a laboratory notebook.
  • Perform resin physical testing and polymer characterization and build polymer structure-properties relationship.
  • Perform independent project tasks with direction and supervision from a group or project leader. Collaborate and support all team efforts.
  • Assist production scale-up and observe scale-up batch as needed. Production support and troubleshooting production problems through the application of knowledge of appropriate scientific and experimental methods.
  • Communicate results clearly through written and verbal summaries, coatings reports, test drill presentations and gate review updates.
  • Share ancillary duties such as equipment maintenance and calibration, 5S, and other support duties is included as responsibilities.
  • Work with supervisor in setting SMART project goals, and successfully fulfill the established project timeline.
  • Develop new insights to polymer design and modification, in order to improve coating performance through, meet regulatory requirements, and/or address unmet customer or market needs.
  • Grow and apply fundamental polymer structure and/or materials science knowledge to accelerate innovation.


  • PhD degree, or MS degree plus 3 years of research experience in a technical field such as Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or Polymer Engineering is preferred.
  • Strong chemistry, polymer, and materials knowledge.
  • Must have high attention to detail, good dexterity, good organizational and time management skills, good written and verbal communication skills, the ability to multitask, and the ability to analyze data and make sound decisions.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in particular) is required. Strong Excel skills are desired.
  • Ability to perform in a team environment and encourage teamwork and information sharing.
  • Is a self-starter, takes responsibility for his/her actions, demonstrates ownership, initiative, and drive.
  • Travel would be less than 10%.
