Job Summary: The R&D Electrical Engineer is responsible for design updates, prototyping and testing of sensors. These sensors must be produced safely and efficiently. This employee will assist teams and individuals in production, quality, safety, and R&D to define and resolve ECNs and maintain ISO 9001 compliance.
The Electrical Engineer will perform a wide variety of electronic and electro-mechanical design, test and troubleshooting of complex explosives and gas detection/identification related products within the Engineering Department. The Electrical Engineer designs new analog and digital circuits, writes firmware, builds prototypes, and performs design verification tasks. The Electrical Engineer should be comfortable with wiring, component installation, hand soldering and cable fabrication to support design development, prototyping and testing.
The Electrical Engineer will work in a multi-disciplinary project team, including engineers from other disciplines and manufacturing personnel. The ideal candidate will demonstrate competency in flexibility, planning and organizing, initiative, and interpersonal skills.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Updating electrical designs due to obsolescence or feature additions Using both Altium and SolidWorks software to design electrical circuits and mechanical components Creating and/or updating product drawings, work guides and specifications Designing and using both common and custom tools and fixtures Maintaining daily logs to monitor and control process variability resulting in repeatable and consistent high-quality products Design fixtures & jigs to provide assembly personnel tools to build sensors with repeatability and quality Identify and communicate assembly or quality issues and assist to determine root cause of vendor defects Identify cost reduction and obsolescence opportunities and issues and communicate them to management Derive and document requirements for electronics designs from high-level system specifications and by working directly with internal and external customers Perform engineering design trade-off studies relating to hardware and firmware Work with vendors and purchasing to specify components Design analog and digital electronics including but not limited to DAC/ADC circuitry, sensor interface, and microprocessors for system control and communications Generate schematics and design PCB layouts Build prototypes, perform design verification including the creation of test plans/procedures, test fixtures, test reports and debugging of hardware/firmware issues Work with project managers to define schedules, and work with manufacturing to define and implement test fixtures/processes and assembly procedures Create, review and maintain engineering documentation, including PCB design documentation, wiring diagrams, cable drawings, build and test procedures Responsible for releasing and maintaining complete design documentation according to established procedures and supporting manufacturing and service during the life of the product Support product development efforts by performing system level trade studies, defining and executing experiments, and investigating new and novel methods and processes
