Senior Engineering Manager - Connected Customer Services at Best Buy

Job Description:

Best Buy is seeking an innovative and technically curious Senior Engineering Manager to join Best Buy's Customer Data Services team. There are multiple areas of specialization available such as Search, Distributed Services, Big Data platforms, Cloud, Infrastructure, and more. We work with emerging technology solutions including Google Cloud Platform, Machine Learning, Kafka Streams, OpenShift, NoSQL, Cassandra, Spring, Java, Groovy, and REST-based web services. You will manage up to 1-2 full teams of engineers. You will also be expected to be able to manage other managers, but this would be limited, and not expand the span of control beyond 2-3 teams. The Senior Engineer Manager will focus is on product strategy and delivering to that.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leads those teams responsible for a large capability, or multiple smaller capabilities.

  • Ensures the quality and integrity of the SDLC for their teams, and identifies opportunities for improvement in how the team works through usage and adoption of recommended tools and standards. Is responsible for defining their teams' objectives and the key results they will deliver in a partnership with their team.

  • Participate in production support along with their team. Active participant in planning and performs code and architecture reviews of the product their teams are responsible for.

  • Mentors team members to be better technically at their craft, as well as organizational challenges and skills, using their past experiences and new information gained via learning as their craft advances.

  • Determines hiring needs that align with the portfolio investment strategy, and helps by leading recruiting and interviews when required.

  • Ensures sufficient documentation exists for the products their team is responsible for, and the documentation is maintained.

  • Provides technical guidance on issues that span multiple projects

  • Evaluates and recommends libraries and frameworks that help with the development

  • Continues to contribute bug fixes and features, but may not be on the critical path for feature delivery

  • Ensures team output is monitorable and highly available

  • Researches new technologies to stay abreast of industry trends and standards

Leadership Responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5 or more years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree OR equivalent relevant professional experience

  • 1 or more years experience managing and leading engineering teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field

  • 5-6 years of relevant professional experience
