The Ohio Department of Agriculture is currently seeking candidates for a temporary intermittent Veterinarian Administrator 1 – CWD Epidemiologist position in the Animal Health Division. The duties for the Veterinarian Administrator 1 – CWD Epidemiologist position include but are not limited to:

• As part of a USDA grant, implements policies and procedures relative to investigations and inspections of animal disease control programs, livestock dealers, livestock markets


• Plans & administers livestock disease control & eradication programs to include but not limited to brucellosis, tuberculosis, and chronic wasting disease statewide


• Coordinates inspection activities with federal or other state officials & conducts training of livestock inspectors, animal owners/producers, veterinary practitioners, etc.


• Evaluates producers and private veterinarians on a continuing basis in performance of inspections, sample collections & submission, reporting, etc. for CWD


• Provides epidemiological support to the states CWD herd certification program


• Develops SOP’s, training material, and webinars or podcasts to promote CWD education


• Investigates reports of suspected existence of dangerously contagious &/or exotic diseases of livestock, analyzes & interprets laboratory results using epidemiological study & related methods standard to the practice of veterinary medicine in order to establish conformation or identify presence of disease


• Works with federal officials & departments (i.e., USDA, APHIS & FSIS; US FDA, extension personnel) to control residue problems & disease control initiatives


• Issues quarantines & appraisals for animals, monitors herd movements & slaughter permits


• Prepares reports, provides information on Division programs & initiatives listed above


• Serves as consultant to animal owners & veterinarians, other agency employees, federal officials, etc.


• Provides professional assistance as requested with testing, sampling, necropsies, etc.


• Reviews & responds to correspondence & inquiries from a variety of levels (i.e., federal government officials/counterparts, animal producers/owners, other division employees, veterinarians, etc.)


• May plan, direct, conduct & attend meetings, conferences, seminars; required to maintain & update personal knowledge of veterinary medicine

Unless required by legislation or union contract, starting salary will be set at the lowest rate of the salary range.  In most cases successful employees will move up a step in the salary range within six months, with subsequent step increases occurring every year as supported by successful performance.

License to practice veterinary medicine issued by Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board

AND

Accreditation under CFR, Title 9, Part 161 issued by United States Department of Agriculture

AND

12 months experience working in diagnostic service laboratory identifying livestock diseases, or pathology training, or practicing veterinary medicine, or working in area of livestock disease control & eradication, or working as veterinarian in state or federal food inspection program, or as manager in area of meat & poultry inspection

AND

6 months training or 6 months experience in state & federal laws regulating practice of veterinary medicine, implementation of programs to inspect & control infectious & contagious diseases in livestock & poultry industry or meat & poultry inspection

AND

Must provide own transportation

OR

18 months experience as Veterinarian, 65915

AND

Accreditation under CFR, Title 9, Part 161 issued by United States Department of Agriculture

AND

Must provide own transportation
