Arcosa Traffic Structures is looking for a Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator in our Ft. Pierce Plant. This position manages safety and risk associated with business and company operations. Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, county and local safety related regulations. In a proactive manner, plans, directs and implements the company’s safety programs to ensure a safe, healthy, and injury/accident-free work environment.


Location: Ft. Pierce, Fl. 


What you’ll do:



  • In partnership with plant management; plan, lead and participate in plant safety meetings.

  • Assist in training, educating and ensuring supervisors are capable of running safety meetings on their own.

  • Review and update monthly plant-specific safety metrics.

  • Develop and ensure safe equipment operating techniques. Partner with the Maintenance Team to ensure all machines and equipment are in good condition.

  • Lead safety on-boarding meetings with all employees and sub-contractors. Review all applicable documentation for completeness to ensure all employees and sub-contractors can adequately execute their scope of work safely.

  • Follow up with supervisors and sub-contractor representatives to ensure proper disciplinary procedures are followed for safety issues. Serve as principal source of information on safety issues to hold supervisors and sub-contractor representatives accountable to safety policies, procedures, and programs.

  • Implement, inspect, and maintain job site and office SDS manuals. Train employees in SDS procedures.

  • Provide and ensure compliance with information, signs, posters, barriers and other materials to warn of potential and actual safety hazards and to prevent access to hazardous conditions.

  • Work with injured employees, supervisors, and HR to facilitate return to full duty work responsibilities and provide meaningful light duty transitional work opportunities.

  • Ensures the implementation, administration, and maintenance of all facility specific EHS programs

  • Initiates, documents, and monitors corrective actions for adherence to safety systems.

  • Manages all EHS continuous improvements initiatives relating to OSHA, EPA, and best management practices

  • Keeps the facility management team informed of safety concerns and Leading EHS metrics.

  • Leads EHS specific initiatives as it pertains to ESG.

  • Participate in & facilitate the Safety Committee at the facility to ensure the Committee’s effectiveness & direction is aligned with the Facility’s expectations.

  • Inspect facility to detect existing potential accident and health hazards.

  • Determine corrective or preventative measures, assign responsibility, and follow up to ensure the corrective measures have been implemented.

  • Conduct periodic plant safety inspections to ensure safety procedures are in place.

  • Analyze accident causes, and hazards, and implement solutions to resolve any deficiencies.

  • Update and maintain the Site-Specific Disaster Plan. Periodically train employees in proper procedures and conduct periodic emergency evacuation drills to ensure planning is effective in practice. Employees should know the placement of all fire extinguishers and first aid kits.

  • Assist with the establishment of additional PPE requirements based on the job-specific requirements

  • Ensure compliance with Worker’s Compensation including working with Risk Management Team, third party administrators, Legal counsel, to effectively investigate and resolve claims in an expeditious and cost effective manner.

  • Maintain a proactive fitness-for-duty process with local Occupational Medical clinics.

  • Plan and implement programs to train supervisors and employees in plant safety practices, safe equipment operating techniques, and fire prevention for the plant and office area.

  • Facilitate employee training in first aid and CPR.

  • Maintain training records in the employee files.

  • Ensure new employees receive safety instructions prior to beginning work. Emphasize any specific plant hazards and thoroughly explain all applicable precautions.

  • Plan and implement risk management, safety policies and procedures in compliance with all federal, state, county and local rules and regulations, including SDS requirements, for both plant and office operations, to maximize a safe working environment.

  • Escalate any federal, state or municipal safety or risk management authority and/or personnel, including, but not limited to OSHA to the Corporate Safety group.

  • Ensure SDS program is maintained and all necessary personnel are trained on the procedures. Manage hazardous materials control program, review samples, and test for hazardous materials prior to the start of operations.

  • Ensure incident reports are prepared and sent in a timely manner.

What you’ll need:



  • Bachelor’s degree in a safety science, safety management, industrial hygiene, environmental science, occupational health, engineering or other industrial discipline work experience.

  • Certifications preferred: Certified Safety Professional (CPS); Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH); Associates Safety Professional (ASP); Graduate Safety Professional (GSP)

  • Knowledge of:

    • Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA)

    • American National Standards Institute (ANSI)

    • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)

    • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

    • Workers Compensation regulations



  • At least 1-3 years of operational / manufacturing / plant safety experience preferred.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to Influence others as well as the ability to present technical information.

  • Ability to deal with situations involving sensitive and confidential company information.

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize and complete multiple projects in a timely manner.

  • Ability to make decisions and operate independently with respect to complex issues and business requirements.

  • Utilize good judgement and sound reasoning.

  • Exercise creative, innovative and effective problem solving.

  • Ability to work independently, as well as function effectively in a team environment.

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective internal and external business relationships.

Working Conditions:



  • Work environment includes plant, warehouse, production and non-production areas and plant grounds.

  • This position may require work/maintenance coverage beyond the normal hours, shift, and on weekends/holidays

  • Ability to tolerate both high and low temperatures, loud noises typical of a manufacturing plant
