Senior Journal Development Editor / Journal Development Editor

Life Sciences (Agriculture, Animal and Forestry)

We are excited to offer an opening to join our vibrant and innovative Medicine and Life Sciences Journals publishing team at Springer Nature, working on our respected BMC and Springer journal portfolios. In joining the team, you would become part of one of the world’s leading global scientific and medical publishers, with staff based in Europe, Asia and the Americas. We have a fantastic opportunity for an individual with a passion for scientific advancement to develop their publishing career and work alongside some of the best in this field.

 

As a Journal Development Editor you would be responsible for a defined list of open access and hybrid journals within medicine and life sciences, working as part of the team to grow the portfolio through strategic journal development and acquisitions. To develop the portfolio, you’ll enjoy being proactive, creative and data driven to devise and implement journal development plans. As the primary publishing contact for your journals, you’ll work alongside leading academics and policy makers, meaning excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong relationships are key to ensure the smooth running and success of the journal portfolio. Working with colleagues across the business you’ll gain exposure to all aspects of the academic journal publishing industry. 

Responsibilities


  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with academic Editors, Editorial Boards, society executives and other key contacts in the field, with the aim of building and maintaining the journals’ reputation and increasing submissions.

  • Build knowledge of the field and the relevant scientific communities to identify development opportunities and translate them into actions to maintain a competitive advantage. This will involve engaging with senior scientists and obtaining their advice.

  • Produce and implement journal development plans for the journals.

  • Work with members of the Medicine & Life Sciences team to acquire new journals in this area

  • Monitor peer-review performance for the portfolio and assist colleagues in dealing with author queries or problem manuscripts.

  • Plan and drive the commissioning of content including pro-actively suggesting topics

  • Support the management of the journals by being the primary contact for Editors and handling contract renewals

  • Ensure the journals are promoted through all relevant avenues

  • Organize and host Editorial Board meetings

  • Represent the company at scientific conferences when required to improve market knowledge, to network within the community, receive feedback on the journals and to promote Springer Nature journals and open access

 

Required Skills, Qualification and Experience – EITHER LEVEL


  • Educated to degree level

  • Interest and understanding of publishing business models (subscription, hybrid, open access)

  • Proven knowledge of publishing process and related matters

  • Highly customer focused

  • Proven administrative skills

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Excellent influencing skills

  • Excellent critical appraisal and problem solving skills

  • Takes ownership to drive and complete tasks

  • Proven ability to meet deadlines consistently

  • Ability to adapt quickly to change

  • Strong attention to detail/high accuracy

  • Proven high level of computer literacy

Desirable


  • Previous experience working in a similar publishing role on journals, with a developed knowledge of the field, is desired.

Additional skills required for Senior JDE:


  • Can independently make appropriate decisions at a journal level.

  • Ability to critically assess and optimise performance of journals against KPIs, and amend development activities accordingly

  • Can proactively assess financial and P&L needs for a journal, and recommend courses of action for journals in their cluster

  • Able to make appropriate contributions into travel budgeting, and forecast submissions and publications for their journals with clear reasoning behind numbers.

  • Able to strategically review journal and society contracts in consultation with internal legal stakeholders, and recommend appropriate course of action to line manager

  • Able to play a significant role in difficult conversations and negotiations alongside senior team members.

  • Confidently leads Editorial Board meetings to achieve clear objectives

  • Effectively tailors presentations to, and engages with, an audience

The position can be based in our London, Dordrecht, Heidelberg or New York office.

We are currently working remotely and have a strong virtual on-boarding induction in place.

When it is safe to return to the office we have a Global Working from Home Policy which will be discussed during interview.
