This role is part of the global Books Editorial Service Team, Sciences & Technology, that provides operational project management support to manage our titles and books portfolio through the publication process. We are looking to recruit an energetic and highly organized graduate as an Editorial Assistant to support our Research Publishing editorial team in Sciences & Technology. This will be a permanent contract and based out of our New York offices.

 

The Editorial Assistant provides a vital role in supporting the Editorial team by ensuring that our authors receive a high quality of service, that our books are published to the highest standards, driving our authors satisfaction and reputation as a market and thought leader while we operate on highly efficient workflows.


As well as providing core support to the Editorial team, the role involves building excellent working relationships with internal teams such as production, and day-to-day administration.

Focus areas & portfolio: 

- We are searching for a candidate to support our Professional Computing portfolio and our Apress titles. The role will manage Books and Videos that are strongly geared towards an audience of professional developers. 

- As a fast time-to-market is a key factor for our commercial success, titles follow a chapter-based workflow where the internal and external review of chapters, and the creation of new chapters, run in parallel to develop titles with the needed speed.

- As we are a central Editorial Service unit for the Books group, the title portfolio to be handled may sometimes also include other book types.

Key Responsibilities

 - Responsible for managing books and videos of the assigned portfolio through the publication process, from the moment a contract is signed until hand over to Production; also acting as the primary contact for managing queries, and as the go-to-person for Production, Editorial and our authors.

- The role works closely with authors and in key partner areas, such as Editorial Acquisition, Production, and vendors, acting as the central interface to respond to questions and queries, and timely handling of projects.

- The role is to manage a variety of administrative and project management-related tasks. The Editorial Assistant manages the development of our titles and videos including e.g. the check of metadata, ensure that content and materials follow the right formats, and gatekeeping relevant policies.

- As a key participant of the publication process you will be closely involved in the continuous improvements of workflows and processes to support the further drive of our operational excellence.

 

Experience, skills, and qualifications
- Have excellent team-working skills to deal with people within the company and externally at all levels

- Be a diplomatic and assertive individual who is able to work with demanding stakeholders

- Be able to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and be able to work on their own initiative

- Be resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems and queries

- Be able to demonstrate good publishing business awareness and the ability to learn quickly

- Have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be numerate and IT systems-literate, with a sharp eye for detail

- Preferably have experience working in academic publishing in an entry-level editorial or project management role

- As we are publishing technology books, a natural affinity with, and/or knowledge of the tech industry is definitely a plus.
