The IACP seeks to hire an Interim Managing Editor to support the IACP’s monthly magazine, Police Chief, for November 1, 2021–March 31, 2022.
Job Responsibilities
Working with IACP staff, project partners, and stakeholders, the Managing Editor will:
Support the mission, vision, and values of the IACP.
Manage content strategy and timing for Police Chiefto ensure the magazine is complete and on time each month.
Supervise and collaborate with key magazine staff (editorial coordinator, proofreader, freelance writer, and administrative assistant).
Edit print and web-only content for Police Chief with support from the existing editorial staff.
Work closely with column leads and staff responsible for content acquisition (“guest editors”) and participate in monthly guest editor check-ins/meetings.
Develop a monthly content plan (story order) based on material received and guest editor recommendations.
Coordinate and communicate with external partners, including ad sales, design firm, and printer.
Communicate with authors in a professional and cordial manner to work collaboratively to develop the best articles possible.
Support web content management and work with magazine staff to ensure weekly and monthly content is posted in a timely manner.
Coordinate social media posts to promote magazine content.
Occasionally assist with or delegate non-magazine editorial/proofreading projects as requested by staff.
Adhere to policies, practices, and guidelines provided.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
Minimum of five (5) years of job-related experience
Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel), Adobe Acrobat, and other relevant business software
Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Analytical skills to include the ability to troubleshoot problems from multiple perspectives
Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills
Strong penchant for collaboration and teamwork
Critical thinking and decision-making skills
Solid task prioritization, organization, and time management skills, and attention to detail
Demonstrated skill in managing staff and projects
Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style and using house style guides
Experience with Adobe Acrobat markup tools and/or knowledge of standard proofreading marks
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in a non-profit organization or association environment
Experience with editing magazines or other periodicals
Knowledge of WordPress web platform
Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop
Experience using InSite or similar online proofing programs
Special Conditions and Work Environment
This is a limited-term/temporary position.
Work takes place primarily in an office environment (remote opportunities may be available).
Light lifting, bending, and reaching may be required
