JOB SUMMARY: Brief description of what this person does, in simple direct terms

Design, develop, test, integrate, and verify FPGA designs for medical video camera systems.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: List the essential duties and responsibilities of the position, in order of importance and/or amount of time spent.


  • Create synthesizable Verilog HDL code for FPGAs

  • Create Verilog or System Verilog code to simulate and verify FPGA designs

  • Troubleshooting FPGA designs

  • Analyze resource utilization, power, and timing.


ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITES: List other important functions that are secondary duties but may be time consuming.


  • Implement small software designs for embedded processors

  • Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES: What does a person in this position need to be able to do?


  • Intermediate expertise using (System) Verilog or VHDL for implementation and verification of FPGA designs.

  • Basic expertise writing and verifying Embedded C for microcontrollers closely interfacing with FPGA.

  • Basic knowledge of video timing and interface standards.

  • Intermediate expertise in troubleshooting electrical systems focusing on the FPGA but including software and hardware.

  • Intermediate ability to find, recommend, and implement innovative and effective solutions to design issues.

  • Basic expertise analyzing FPGA power, performance, resources, and other tradeoffs relative to system requirements

  • Basic expertise architecting FPGA designs to meet system requirements. This includes contributing to system requirements development

  • Intermediate understanding of the internal structure of FPGAs and the behavior of FPGA design tools

  • Basic expertise improving and influencing the direction and process of FPGA design within Karl Storz

  • Basic expertise leading other engineers in a technical role. This includes mentoring and knowledge sharing.

  • Intermediate expertise writing clear, accurate, and thorough requirements, analysis and design descriptions.

  • Knowledge of medical device quality system regulations and standards (eg, U.S. FDA Quality System Regulation 21CFR Part 820, ISO13485, ISO9001)


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: What is the usual educational background and work experience of an individual qualified to perform this job?

BS in Electrical or Computer Engineering and 2-5 years years experience in FPGA design or related field.


MS in Electrical or Computer Engineering and 0-2 years years experience in FPGA design or related field.


PHYSICAL & MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: What are the specific physical and mental demands of this position?


  • Visual acuity sufficient for testing

  • Ability to sit for extended periods (during meetings and computer work)

  • Ability to lift video and test equipment (approximately 20 lbs)

  • Ability to connect electrical devices

  • Communicate clearly with manager and co-workers


TRAINING REQUIREMENTS: Safety, regulatory compliance, legal & job specific
