Catholic Charities of Baltimore is currently seeking a Teaching Asst- Classroom who will care and educate severely emotionally disabled children within the Villa Maria School system. Within the school, the Classroom Teaching Assistant (CTA) assists in supervising children, supporting the teacher in classroom activities, and providing individual and small-group instruction as directed. The work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm.


Villa Maria School provides educational and clinical services for children with significant emotional, behavioral, and learning challenges. We offer multiple programs serving students from kindergarten through 8th grade in small classrooms (up to nine students) who are experiencing emotional, behavioral and learning challenges such that their local school system refers them to VMS for placement.


JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Assists teachers in the classroom by helping with the implementation of class lesson plans and providing individual or
    small-group instruction as directed to ensure that curriculum and IEP goals are met. Assists in routine administrative tasks
    such as copying, collating, and filing materials to adequately maintain materials and records. May serve as substitutes for
    absent teachers.

  • Escorts children within and between buildings and to and from various appointments to ensure adequate supervision of
    children at all times. Includes driving children for appointments, field trips, etc.

  • Monitors children's behavior and maintains Behavior Management documentation by completing point sheets in prescribed time limits, calculating daily behavior management levels, calculating monthly goal percentages, and completing behavior logs to ensure that children are treated fairly and that the Behavior Management System is implemented consistently.

  • Provides crisis intervention including recognizing and deescalating problem situations by separating children involved
    and/or talking to children to assess nature of problem and provide resolution, initiating time-out when necessary, and
    initiating therapeutic holds when necessary to ensure the safety of all children and to maintain the therapeutic structure and organization of the setting. Completes and submits occurrence reports on a timely basis.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:



  • High School diploma plus 2 years’ experience working children or vulnerable populations. Working in a school setting
    with adolescents preferred. 

  • This is a 12-month position whose schedule and follows the Teacher’s Leave package.

  • Requires the ability to walk and stand up. Requires physical ability to intervene and restrain children in crisis situations including the ability to run, lift and transport children to another location.


REQUIRMENTS & ABILITIES:



  • Requires effective childcare skills including nurturing, patience, consistency, and ability to apply effective discipline and
    behavior management techniques. Requires the capacity to relate to severely emotionally disabled children in a sensitive,
    understanding, and insightful manner.

  • Requires effective oral and written communication skills in contacts with teachers, therapists, and parents. Requires ability
    to accurately assess and document information for incident reports and Behavior Management documents. Requires active
    listening skills in contacts with staff and children.

  • Requires ability to assess problem situations and apply the most effective yet least restrictive intervention within
    established therapeutic goals.

  • Requires the ability to acquire and maintain TCI certification in order to demonstrated continued compliance with the
    established TCI competencies.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:



  • Involves risk of exposure to communicable and infectious disease requiring stringent adherence to infection control
    procedures.

  • Requires the ability to acquire and maintain TCI certification in order to demonstrated continued compliance with the
    established TCI competencies. Will be exposed to resistant or aggressive client behavior requiring ability to implement
    crisis intervention and therapeutic holds.

  • Must be able to lift children (using body mechanics).

  • Requires ability to stand/walk/throughout the School building and residence.
