Job Description:

We are seeking a Staff Engineer to perform the following:


  • Join the USG in-house engineering team to provide mechanical engineering design support to over 50 manufacturing plants in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

  • Candidate will work on large and small industrial projects and will report directly to the Mechanical Design Manager.  Responsible for the 3D modeling and drafting of process systems and building layouts.

  • Manage their own time and work efficiently on multiple projects at once. 

  • Work with operations personnel and engineers of various disciplines to develop unique solutions to complex engineering problems.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with customers, suppliers, 3rd party engineering firms and colleagues.

  • Supervise and guide engineers. 

  • Lead the mechanical design on various assigned projects.

Accountabilities


  1. Lead the design of mechanical systems for projects assigned and provides technical input to 3rd party engineering firms to maintain company standards.  Primary duties are the layout of industrial plants in a 3D environment, the creation of general arrangement drawings, and detailing of conveying, piping, and ducting systems.

  2. Collaborate with other engineering disciplines, process experts, operations, and vendors to ensure solutions are being implemented to meet project goals.  Attend meetings and transform broad project needs into specific tasks.

  3. Collect information from drawing archives, technical engineers, and the field to create designs. 

  4. Check mechanical drawings against final vendor models and drawings from other disciplines as well as other mechanical designers.  Ensure dimensional accuracy and clearance from interferences.

  5. Understand USG’s proprietary processes and use the knowledge gained to augment guidance from other team members.  Fill in gaps in direction and propose new solutions to project challenges.

  6. Review project scopes and maintain a project plan identifying outstanding tasks and the current state of all drawings and models.

  7. Answer requests for information from vendors and production facilities. Troubleshoot as necessary. 

  8. Assist in the creation and standardization of key project documents.

  9. Attend project meetings to understand scope, schedule, and budget to develop and design the project needs with no supervision.

     


  1. Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or an associated field from an accredited four-year engineering program

  2. 5 – 10 years of experience in a heavy industrial environment and familiarity with continuous process manufacturing.

  3. Experience in supervising engineers required.

  4. Served as lead mechanical design engineer on major projects.

  5. Proficient at developing 3D industrial building layouts in AutoCAD Plant3D.  Experience creating general arrangement, fabrication, and pipe ISO drawings.  Documented training in Autodesk software preferred.  

  6. Experience working with point cloud scans.

  7. Willingness and ability to travel within North America up to 20% of the time.

  8. Skilled with general business software including remote meeting applications and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.

  9. Strong written & verbal communication skills.  Ability to create written technical documentation.

  10. Strong interpersonal skills.  Ability to build relationships and collaborate across disciplines.

  11. Self-starter with strong organizational & project planning skills to be able to handle multiple activities and projects.  Ability to understand needs and prioritize tasks.

  12. Systematic and analytical decision-making skills.

  13. Has a high level of integrity to maintain data security.
