Job Summary

The Precision Machinist Apprentice will be based in Tempe, AZ . Flex Tech Mold is a leader in the mold making industry for over 40 years. The candidate will be enrolled in a formal four-year apprenticeship sponsored by the NTMA. At the end of the apprenticeship the candidate will have earned their Journeyman's card as a precision machinist. This is an exciting and rewarding position for someone looking to start a career in the plastic injection mold making industry. We are looking for candidates that have a basic knowledge of shop safety practice, machining and simple inspection methods such as reading a micrometer and calipers.

Here is a glimpse of what you’ll learn as an apprentice…

• Precision CNC machining in horizontal and vertical mills with the ability to set up and prove out programs and make necessary G and M code edits.


• CNC lathes with the ability to set up and prove out programs and make necessary G and M code edits, and write programs by manually inputting data.


• Manual and CNC surface grinding to include form grinding and other various grinding disciplines.


• Electrode manufacturing to include milling and turning in CNC centers.


• CNC EDM machining utilizing fully automated EDM cells.


• Wire EDM machining.


• Plastic injection mold assembly and knowledge of how to manufacture a mold.


• Manual machining.

Here is some of what you’ll need (required):

• Prior experience with machine shop equipment.  (manual or CNC lathes, mills, grinders, etc.)


• Ability to read simple measuring tools such as a micrometer


• If prior machine shop experience is non-existent then successful completion of a machine shop class or enrollment in a class at a school or college is mandatory


• Knowledge of basic shop safety principles
