Summary of Major Responsibilities

The Senior Laboratory Service Engineer (Sr. LSE) is responsible for the Instrument and Automation Services of all laboratory equipment and instrumentation with a focus on automation; responsibilities include installation, calibration, maintenance, and repair. This includes both simple (e.g., orbital shakers) and complex (e.g., liquid handling robotics and custom automation equipment) instrumentation in the various laboratory environments. These environments may include clinical laboratories, R&D laboratories, and manufacturing and quality control laboratories. The Sr. LSE will effectively communicate relevant feedback to appropriate departments regarding the equipment and automation performance and continuously work with other LSEs and the clinical laboratory team to ensure proper instrument function and troubleshoot any system concerns.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Lead and/or collaborate on new and existing laboratory instrument installations, plan maintenance, and unscheduled event on all laboratory equipment. Perform qualification process necessary to ensure user needs are met and departmental requirements, such as procedures and training, are satisfied according to service policies.
  • Commission new laboratory equipment (e.g., centrifuges, liquid handling robots, shakers, etc.).

  • Troubleshoot laboratory complaints/feedback when laboratory system needs technical investigation.

  • Make continuous improvements to automate and simplify the inquiry and service processes, to improve the laboratory member's experience, minimize response time, and improve our quality and capability.

  • Coordinate escalation with vendors to quickly address elevated concerns.

  • Represent the service organization as a core team member on automation and other laboratory improvement projects.

  • Provide ongoing document support to address changes to service requirements and drive improvements for service activities.

  • Assist and mentor LSE Is and LSE IIs.

  • Provide feedback to Lab Service Lead on LSE Is and LSE IIs performance and process improvements.

  • Recommend and implement changes to ensure ongoing high-quality performance of laboratory equipment.

  • Perform all service activities in compliance with all relevant safety and regulatory bodies (e.g., OSHA, CLIA, etc.).

  • Maintain and continuously develop personal knowledge and expertise related to the service of complex clinical laboratory equipment.

  • Track all service activities utilizing system(s) developed in accordance with service policies and procedures.

  • Ensure all service documentation is complete, timely, and accurate following Good Documentation Practices (GDP).

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.

  • Ability to employ gross motor and fine motor skills during the installation, servicing, and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

  • Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.

  • Ability and means to travel between local Exact Sciences locations.

  • Ability to travel up to 5 % of working time away from work location, may include overnight/weekend travel.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Technology, Molecular Biology, Electronics, or related field; or Associates degree and 2 years of relevant experience as outlined in the essential duties in lieu of Bachelor's degree; or High School diploma/General Education diploma and 4 years of relevant experience as outlined in the essential duties in lieu of Bachelor's degree.

  • 3+ years of experience servicing laboratory/medical equipment or automation systems.

  • 2+ years of experience supporting the administration/execution of a service program.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and similar software.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.

  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications


  • 3+ years of experience with Quality Systems and documentation requirements.

  • 2+ years of experience operating laboratory equipment.

  • Experience with Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS).

  • Experience with Digital Pathology Imaging.

  • Experience maintaining Histology equipment.

  • Experience loading and/or updating software applications.

  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude relevant to maintenance and repair of complex laboratory equipment, such as liquid handling robots.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan workload, allocate tasks, and scale operations to align with business priorities.

  • Working knowledge of clinical laboratory service operations and activities.
