The Sterile Processing Assistant Manager assists the Sterile Processing Manager in the daily operations of the department. Schedules, trains, supervises and evaluates Sterile Processing employees. Monitors quality in the areas of: decontamination, processing, inspection, assembly and packaging; sterilization; storage; and distribution of reusable medical devices and supplies, including the case cart system.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. Collaborates with the Sterile Processing Manager in the selection of qualified individuals for the department openings; assigns, delegates and coordinates employees' workloads; monitors staff efficiency and productivity assuring completion of daily assignments; provides timely feedback and recognition to staff.

3. Partners with the Sterile Processing manager in the development and implementation of the capital & operations budgets, including reporting and analyzing operational variances.

4. Orients new employees to the department and work areas; provides and coordinates training; confirms and maintains competency records for employees.

5. Routinely inspects and assures that the sterile processing area is maintained for cleanliness/infection control' takes measures immediately to act on any deficiencies noted.

6. Assists and supports the Sterile Processing Manager with communicating and implementing unit/area changes.

7. Completes employee's annual performance appraisals on time.

8. Timely, objectively and constructively coaches staff as appropriate when practice and/or safety issues are observed or reported; communicates with the manager if a coworker fails to respond to proper guidance or adherence to standards expected for quality of work; documents corrective actions and reviews with staff as appropriate.

9. Assists with making rounds in operating rooms to detect and control variables which may interfere with smooth departmental and hospital functioning. Queries perioperative staff/managers to identify needs.

10.Participates in monitoring quality improvement activities to ensure Joint Commission, AAMI, and AORN compliance; assists in maintaining compliance with regulatory agencies such as OSHA, EPA, FDA and Department of Health.

11. Monitors staff compliance related to safety and Infection Control guidelines.

12. Communicates and coordinates with designated personnel in surgery about incoming loaner instruments and equipment; assures instruments and equipment are ready to meet patient, surgeon and staff needs.

13. Advances work knowledge by participating in continuing education in-services, reading periodicals/literature and seeking ongoing development opportunities; attends hospital management and organizational meetings as requested.

14. Maintains the Sterile Processing Microsystems (SPM) computerized asset management database; enters issues into Lawson to decrement/reorder the implant inventory in support of surgery.

15. Performs Sterile Processing Technician job functions as needed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalency required. Minimum of two (2) years sterile processing and/or surgery experience required. Prior supervisory experience preferred.

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:

Certification from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution OR the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM), Central Service Society OR certification as a Surgical Technologist required within 2 years of hire.
