Job Description:

In 1985, Koch Foods started as a one-room chicken de-boning and cutting operation with 13 employees. We’ve grown to be one of the top poultry processors in the U.S., but the core of who we are remains unchanged: a team that is adept, reliable and service oriented.

Job Summary:

The primary function of the Train Engineer is to maintain responsibility over the physical operation and safety of the locomotive.

Train Engineers will operate Norfolk & CSX locomotives for the unloading of corn unit trains, while being spotted by a Koch Food’s Receiving Operator. Upon arrival, Train Engineer will coordinate with Receiving Operator or Management on job duties.
Most unit trains consist of 90 rail cars to be unloaded and typically take 10-12 hours to unload on a loop track. On occasion, Train Engineer may be called in to help assist with clearing or moving rail cars to make soybean meal available for the continuance of production.

  • To always ensure compliance with all train orders, signals, and railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration.

  • To always inspect all equipment prior to departure.

  • To always maintain a clear line of communication with receiving operators

  • Must be licensed and certified by the Federal Railroad Association.

  • Must be able to walk on uneven terrain and board locomotives safely.

  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time.

  • Must have a flexible schedule and be able to perform job duties within a 24-hour notice, sometimes less.


  • Verbal Comprehension – Understands oral and written communications.


  • Communication Skills – Provides clear instructions/directions. Listens and adheres to operations and management guidance.


  • Resourcefulness – Ability to find innovate ways to overcome obstacles, problems, and unforeseen/challenged situations.


  • Alertness – Always aware and alert of possible safety hazards.

  • 12 hours minimum pay

  • Hourly rate: $35.00
