Position Description:

The Engineering Director is responsible for the engineering and maintenance function including the provision of quality, timely and cost effective maintenance & facilities management services and the execution of the approved Capital Plan ensuring the capital program is completed on time and within budget.  This manager reports to the Winslow, ME Site Head.

The Engineering Director is responsible for the supervision of the engineering team that supports the daily operations of the facility, including process engineering and project engineering.  The Engineering Director is also responsible for contractor management, including coordinating facilities work through third party facilities management.  The Engineering Director is also responsible for the productivity and development of the employees with the purpose of ensuring that reliable and compliant equipment and systems are used in the manufacturing process. Additionally, the Engineering Director, as part of the site lead team, partners with all site functional disciplines to support the site technical agenda, business plan priorities, and compliance plan objectives.

Functions, Duties, Tasks:


  • Demonstrate Safety leadership, Drive the culture of safety first - quality always

  • Strong partnership and influence with Operations, QA/QC, Regulatory, Supply Chain, Finance, and other leadership areas.

  • Participation in Lead Team, metrics, Site reviews, Business Planning and own functional content

  • Lead and support site and community engagement

  • Provide technical, business and people leadership support to the engineering staff, including setting team goals, ensuring appropriate training and qualification, completing performance reviews and establishing development plans

  • Manage staffing including recruiting, resource planning, and succession planning

  • Identify training requirements and develop the skill-set within the engineering group to support existing and new technologies

  • Management and delivery of the overall engineering budget

  • Oversee the security function for the site

  • Work effectively as a member of the site leadership team

  • Demonstrate a commitment to environmental, health, and safety

  • Develop a safety awareness culture within the engineering team, ensure risks to employee health and safety are rigidly controlled and complete duties in compliance with the Company’s Environmental Health and Safety procedures

  • Identify, track, and report key indicators of functional performance

  • Play a leading role in ensuring that team members and all Engineering procedures and processes are in compliance with applicable Regulations, Good Engineering Standards, Elanco Global Quality Standards and Engineering Standards and other relevant specific corporate directives

  • Develop, track and report out KPIs that drive continuous improvement in the performance of services provided, including downtime, WO response time and closure, PM’s, and customer satisfaction

  • Manage the third party IFM team for the site

  • Responsible for site development strategy and managing the capital investment plan and budget

  • Manage and develop the reliability programs and equipment strategies to minimize down time for all critical pieces of equipment and thereby minimize product write offs due to equipment malfunction or poor process control

  • Ensure strict adherence to the maintenance schedules generated and carry out a program review on a regular basis

  • Manage system to minimize disruptions to production and product supply

  • Ensure facilities are maintained in good condition, grounds are kept clean and tidy and adequate pest control is employed

  • Support manufacturing organization with technical resources to resolve equipment and process issues and collaborate with other department leaders to resolve issues

  • Introduce cost saving initiatives including energy and water conservation programs

  • Implement project management procedures and manage limited resources to deliver projects on time and on budget

Minimum Qualification (education, experience and/or training, required certifications):


  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a similar role within manufacturing

  • Experience in Equipment Reliability, Commissioning, Qualification, and Capital Project management

  • Completion of Post Offer Exam, Completion of Work Simulation or Completion of Administrative Skills Testing if applicable.

Additional Preferences:


  • Master’s degree in Engineering preferred

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a similar role within the animal health or pharmaceutical industry strongly preferred

  • Knowledge of the principles and guidelines of CFR 9 and the USDA

  • Knowledge of GMP pharmaceutical guidelines

  • Knowledge of freeze drier, fermentation, and fill line technologies.

  • Understanding of validation activities associated with vaccine process, technology transfer and process validation

  • Exposure to Lean -Six sigma principles

  • Ability to instill teamwork within the department and demonstrate key interpersonal skills

  • Ability to ensure appropriate technical depth and rigor with departmental technical deliverables

  • Ability to make decisions independently and to network with others as appropriate

  • Ability to provide innovative solutions to plant, divisional, and corporate issues and leverage ideas from other functional areas

  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to various audiences, particularly one-on-one coaching and feedback with direct reports

  • Ability to function in a team environment as a leader and as a member of management teams

  • Ability to manage projects within an agreed time schedule and budget

Other Information:


  • Situations may arise where off-schedule work, both on-site and off-site, may be required

  • This position requires less than 10% travel on an annual basis
