Reporting to the HSC Supervisor, the University Engineer will construct, repair, and/or recognize impending problems by visualizing and analyzing, using gathered data, experience, instrumentation, and applied sciences to make decisions and determine the urgency for repair or outage of building equipment including, but not limited to absorption, centrifugal, reciprocating water chillers, fans, pumps, heat exchangers, compressors, automatic temperature controls for HVAC equipment, boilers, and steam-operated equipment. In addition, the Engineer will handle maintenance and preventative maintenance of mechanical rooms, including; operation and maintenance of high-pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment, de-aerators, feed-water pumps, forced draft fans, steam lines and traps, water softeners, air compressors, and other job-related equipment. Additional responsibilities include a broad range of general building operation and maintenance of fans, pumps, air compressors, large tonnage air conditioning units, boilers, steam-operated equipment, maintenance and repair of building heaters, and central air conditioning equipment; boiler room maintenance and repair.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

High School or Trade School diploma. A current, validated Philadelphia Class "A" Engineers license with a minimum of (5) five years' experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Required Skills and Abilities:

*Familiarity with Federal, State, and local laws and regulations pertaining to equipment operation and repair

* Knowledge of equipment to minimize the time required to diagnose problems and declare corrective action

* Knowledge of tools, hoisting, rigging, and equipment necessary to isolate, remove, repair, replace, and safely startup

* Knowledge of preventative maintenance procedures to minimize repairs and reduce outages

* Capable of assembling a complete list of parts necessary to facilitate repairs or installations

* Ability to evaluate the thoroughness/quality of vendor repaired equipment and their use of parts

*Trouble-shooting equipment and systems and coordinate with other trades, such as electricians, instrument tech. etc.

* Skills to communicate recommendations to supervisor

* Perform test to measure air velocity, air temperature, line temperatures, and pressures, etc.

* Capable of welding, cutting, bracing, and soldering, whether antimony or silver

*Knowledge of equipment to minimize the time required to diagnose problems and declare corrective action

*Knowledge of tools, hoisting, rigging, and equipment necessary to isolate, remove, repair, replace, and safely startup

*Capable of assembling a complete list of parts necessary to facilitate repairs or installations

*Evaluate the thoroughness and qualify of vendor repaired equipment and their use of parts

*Skills to communicate recommendations to supervision

Preferred

*Completion of a union apprenticeship program

*Experience working in a hospital or healthcare setting preferred
