Job Description:

Introduction/Summary:

The CESL Instructor position provides support to the teaching and retention functions of the CESL Intensive English Program (IEP). This position will teach 8-20 hours per semester (two sessions with one down week in the middle for planning, grading, and new student orientation), depending on the needs of the program. It is preferred that instructors should have their MATESOL or equivalent and/or bachelor's degree and a minimum of 1 year teaching ESL.

Job function:

Teaching ESL courses to international students to prepare them for success at the University and beyond.


  • 8-20 hours of face-to-face instruction per week in 12-14 week increments (spring, summer, fall)

  • 4-10 hours of planning and grading per week

Provides support to IEP student retention/advising, as well as cultural activities and events


  • Collaborates with lead instructor to ensure at-risk students are properly advised

  • Helps with student orientation

  • Attends and participates in special events and activities

Required Education: Master's Degree OR Bachelor's degree AND a minimum of 1 year teaching ESL

 


Knowledge and Skills:


  • Faculty must be experienced in and demonstrate strong teaching skills

  • Must possess knowledge of classroom teaching techniques, use of classroom equipment, and be knowledgeable in various aspects of English Language training.

  • Must possess excellent communication, both oral and written, and organizational skills necessary to the position

  • Must possess excellent relationship skills to work effectively with individuals or groups

  • Must be flexible in the days and times available to teach

  • At least two years’ experience as an Instructor

  • Must be able to crouch, pull, push, reach, engage in repetitive motions including movements of the hands, wrists or fingers, speak including expressing oneself or exchanging information with others, hear including receiving detailed information orally or making fine discriminations in sound, and see including color, depth perception or clarity.

  • The work requirements for this position include teaching during daytime and some evening hours depending upon the needs of the department and its students. All classes are held on the OU campus.

Department Preferences


  • MATESOL or equivalent and/or bachelor's degree and a minimum of 1 year teaching ESL.

Supervision: This position has no supervisory duties.
