Overview

The Intelligent Systems and Facilities Group is currently seeking a senior computer scientist to lead world-class research in the area of system software for distributed intelligent systems that enables the laboratory of the future.

The Intelligent Systems and Facilities Group addresses the system software challenges for scientific instruments and facilities. The group collaborates with computer, computational, instrument and domain science experts across the Computer Science and Mathematics Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, other national laboratories, and universities to foster the scientific leadership in smart systems, instruments, and facilities necessary to further both the ORNL and Department of Energy missions. The group's research and development connects scientific instruments and facilities with edge and leadership computing capability and provides operational intelligence with machine-in-the-loop feedback. It enables science breakthroughs with autonomous experiments, "self-driving" laboratories, smart manufacturing, and AI-driven design, discovery and evaluation.

The position will be in the Advanced Computing Systems Section within the Computer Science and Mathematics (CSM) Division. CSM delivers fundamental and applied research capabilities in a wide range of areas, including applied mathematics and computer science, experimental computing systems, scalable algorithms and systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data management, workflow systems, analysis and visualization technologies, programming systems and environments, and system science and engineering.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

We are seeking a recognized leader in their area of technical expertise that will initiate, lead and perform independent R&D on an ongoing basis.

Responsibilities for this position include working closely with the project team to create, evaluate, and publish novel research ideas, supervise and mentor students, and collaborate with our partners and sponsors. Research activities include, but are not limited to:


  • Rapid prototyping and evaluation of experimental systems, including distributed system software and tools, and being proficient developing complex software systems, including distributed messaging, data transfer, resource orchestration, command & control and workflow solutions and message/data translations.

  • Integrating scientific application and experimental distributed system software with edge, cloud and extreme-scale computing resources, data facilities and scientific instruments for real-time steering and design of experiments.

  • Developing concepts, system software designs and prototypes for robot-controlled laboratories, autonomous experiments and "self-driving" laboratories with computational modeling and simulation and AI in the feedback loop.

  • Publishing papers in high-quality refereed conferences and journals, such as SC, ICS, ISC, SOSP, IPDPS, HPDC, and IEEE TPDS.

  • Actively collaborating with computer, computational, instrument and domain scientists at government laboratories, in academia and in industry.

  • Contributing to and leading research proposals and reporting to major funding agencies.


Basic Qualifications Required


  • Requires a Ph.D. in computer science, computational science or a related discipline. and at least 6 years of relevant research experience, beyond the PhD.

  • A well established track record of research in an area relevant to one or more areas of expertise of the group.

  • Previous experience in ONE or more of the following areas:

    • Knowledge of edge, cloud and high-performance computing system software

    • Expertise in developing distributed system software and tools

    • Experience with designing and prototyping of autonomous system software

    • Skilled in prototyping system software and tools for operational data analytics



Preferred Qualifications


  • The ability to take initiative on research insights to bring them to fruition through publication or demonstration on mission applications.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and strong personal motivation.

  • The ability to work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary team.
