Overview


The Systems and Decision Sciences (SDS) Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated senior statistician to develop a data-driven research program in the areas of complex systems, decision science, including operations research, in support of the scientific mission of the Laboratory and of the Department of Energy. In this role, you will be expected to lead and collaborate with scientists within the division as well as within Oak Ridge National Laboratory, on a variety of intra-disciplinary research projects.
Many areas of modern statistics are of interest, with emphasis on those that can take advantage of ORNL's world-leading computing capabilities and those that provide statistical inference solutions for data from its world-class science user facilities in the physical and biological sciences.


Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to:


* Bayesian inference
* Functional data analysis
* Nonparametric methods
* Stochastic analysis, applicable to complex dynamical systems.
* Time series analysis


The SDS Group consists of researchers focused on the analysis of natural and human complex systems and networks, operations research, artificial intelligence, inferential Bayesian statistics, discrete optimization, with an emphasis on DOE mission-critical applications, high performance/large-scale computing and large-scale data processes and applications.
This position is within the Mathematics in Computation Section in the Computer Science and Mathematics (CSM) Division. The Mathematics in Computation Section creates the mathematics and algorithms that harness machines, ideas, and data, that enable far reaching scientific breakthroughs. CSM delivers fundamental and applied research capabilities in a wide range of areas, including applied mathematics and computer science, experimental computing systems, scalable algorithms and systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data management, workflow systems, analysis and visualization technologies, programming systems and environments, and system science and engineering.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

We are seeking a recognized leader in their area of technical expertise that will initiate, lead and perform independent R&D on an ongoing basis.
Responsibilities for this position include working closely with the project team to create, evaluate, and publish novel research ideas, supervise and mentor students, contribute to the grant-writing and securing process, and collaborating with our partners and sponsors. Research activities include, but are not limited to:


* Formulating research initiatives that push the frontiers of systems and decision sciences.
* Publishing papers in high-quality refereed conferences and journals.
* Developing scalable, high performance software and computing tools.
* Actively collaborating with industry, academia, government labs, and applications developers in a variety of venues.
* Leading and contributing to research proposals and reporting to major funding agencies.



Basic Qualifications

* Requires a PhD in Statistics, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or Computational Sciences, and at least 6years of relevant research experience, beyond the PhD.
* A well established track record of research in an area relevant to one or more areas of expertise of the group.
* Demonstrated experience in leading R&D projects.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills.
* Effective interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

* Expertise in methodologies that harness the big data revolution, including artificial intelligence methodologies.
* Research relevant to high performance computing, large scale data-informed methodologies and algorithms.
* Research in the applications of graph-theoretic analysis, probabilistic approaches to complex systems, operations and decision research.
