TheResearch and Development Systems Engineering(RDSE)Group in theInformation Technology ServicesDivision(ITSD)at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks to hireaLinuxSystemsEngineer. In this position,this individual will be embedded within ourAtmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM)groupintheEnergy and Environmental Sciences Directoratedoing Linux Server.

What will you be doing?

The R&D Systems Engineering Group focuses on supportingresearcher'sIT needs. Staff charge directly to projects or programs, and not to a centralized budget. Our goal is to enable research while protecting ORNL assets, especially from cyber incidents.

As aLinuxSystemsEngineer, you will be performingLinuxServerandLarge StorageSystemsupport.You will help maintain system health andprovide system analysisto the customer. You will documentany work done in accordancetothe customer's direction.In addition to Linux system support, you will also be performingwork supporting CI/CD processes, Kubernetes administration andcontainer administration.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

There are varioustechnical tasks that willneed to be performed in this role. Some ofthese taskscan include:

  • TroubleshootvariousLinuxserver related issues.


  • ProvideNASsystemsupport.


  • Install and configure Red Hat Linux Serversystems.


  • Build out both physical and virtual systems.


  • Engineerand provide consultation forcustom systemsolutions.


  • Manage,analyzeandtuneVMware Clusters.



  • Work with Developers to maintaincustomerapplications.


  • Performsystemupgrades.


  • Ensure Backups are completed and assist in any recoveries if needed.


  • Document all requiredwork as required by customer.


  • Provideadvanced Linux Supportasneeded.



  • Monitorsystemperformance.


  • Kubernetes(k8s)configuration and management.


  • Assisting with CI/CD projects.


  • Container Administration.


  • Install,configureand maintain system software, both commercial packages and various freely available software (includingApache,MySQL,Postgres,PHP,ZFS,etc.).



  • Patch both system and 3rdparty vendor software to ensure security and stability.Monitor for patch releases and work with the customers and other admins to ensure the patches are applied in a timely manner.


  • Provide consulting inboth the selection and purchase of hardware and software.


  • Ensure the secure and effective operation of computing systems through compliance with ORNL procedures and IT Internal Operating Procedures.


  • Work with other system engineers and vendors to resolve both hardware and software issues.


  • Work with local bargaining unit personnel on hardware installation and hardware repairs where it is outside the scope ofavendor.


Basic Requirements


  • Bachelor'sDegree in Computer Science(or relatedfield),orequivalentofeducation and experience will be considered.


  • Excellent interpersonal skills suitable foruser support and the ability to work well with peer system administratorsis required.


  • Minimumof5 years Linux Serveradministration.



  • Minimumof2 years container administration.


  • Minimum of 2 years of Kubernetes administration.


  • Minimum of 2 years of CI/CDexperience.


  • Demonstratedcapabilities to work in a dynamic environment.


  • Good written and verbal communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Strong knowledge ofRed Hat Linuxoperating systems is preferred.


  • At least 2 years ofGitLab administration experience.


  • At least 2 years supportingNAS storage systems.



  • At least 2 years supportingVMware Clusters.


  • At least 2 years of experiencecreatingscriptsusing BASHandPython.


  • Strong knowledge ofopen sourceweb application services, such as Apache, isdesired.


  • Previous experience working in a government, scientific or otherhighlytechnical environment strongly desired.


  • Good documentationskillsarealso desired.


This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain aHSPD-12 PIV credential.
