Occupational Summary

Supervise and coordinate administrative and technical activities of the laboratory.

Work Performed

Serve as supervisor for biweekly technical staff in all laboratory locations. Coordinate schedules, time away/coverage, address initial inquiries for FMLA or other HR/employee relations questions, counsel and refer to departmental central managers as needed. Prepare initial documentation for leaves, approve time off requests in API, monitor and manage performance of biweekly staff.

Serve as liaison with principal investigators for employee relations matters. Advise faculty indirect supervisors of institutional and departmental policies to ensure compliance within the personnel management of the laboratories. Faculty direct work flow and assignments, this position manages performance and expectations for the workflows assigned and provides coverage as needed. Represent department with employee relations issues that arise with the laboratory biweekly personnel.

Organize and execute laboratory upfits of existing space, and coordinate construction, purchases, and upfit (including actual move and startup /shut down) of departmental labs in department or borrowed lab space. Assist in formulating and implementing the short and long-range goals for the operation of the laboratories. Project future needs and formulate strategies consistent with projections. Recommend purchases and provide recommendations regarding lab budgets.

Monitor and maintain capital equipment inventory, and report to business office as requested. Maintain "wish list" and replacement cycle inventory list, to facilitate planning for future purchases. Maintain liaison with investigators, research personnel and staff to solve specific operating problems and improve technical activities. Advise on technical procedures, techniques and equipment, and

maintain conformance with specific operational standards.

Request and monitor repairs of existing equipment. negotiates quotes and contracts for laboratory services, seeks quotes for pricing of supplies and equipment, makes recommendations to PI regarding purchase, orders supplies and arrives them in Buy@Duke

Ensure the laboratory technicians and analysts are properly trained in Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and equipment specific requirements. Maintain and

generate SOPs for specific labs and for Dermatology research operations. Facilitate training of new faculty and postdoctoral associates, visiting scholars, and students.

Serve on RQMP committee and manage tasks throughout the year to keep PIs, staff, and department in compliance with the latest policies; track compliance with RQMP initiatives, attend meetings on behalf of Vice Chair of Research and CDA.

Represent the laboratory in interactions with other departments. Serve as single point of contact for basic science research labs in dermatology dept. Escalate issues to department central management.

Provide guidance as requested regarding hiring and training for technical personnel. Supervise, train and instruct residents, interns, students or lower level personnel in laboratory techniques and procedures. Provide coverage for other labs as needed. Participate with interviewing, hiring, orienting new staff and postdocs. Recommend candidates for hire. Complete and provide performance evaluations, including 90 day, mid year and year end.

Minimum Qualifications


Bachelor's degree in engineering or field of science related to the position.


Work requires a minimum of 5-7 years experience in laboratory management. OR ANY OTHER EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
