The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine, Section of Comprehensive Cancer Care, invites qualified individuals to apply for an associated faculty position in the Academic Clinician track in Oncology & Clinical Trials at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. This individual will be responsible for clinical oversight of patients enrolled in oncology trials conducted at Penn Vet's Ryan Hospital, and will work within the established clinical trials infrastructure.


Clinical responsibilities include: management of the clinical trials caseload, patient recruitment, and oversight of house officers and nursing staff. Teaching responsibilities include: clinical and didactic teaching of veterinary students and house officers, research mentorship for oncology residents and specialty interns, and participation in daily case rounds. In addition to clinical care, the medical oncologist in this role will work closely with the Director of Comparative Oncology Trials and the Penn Vet Cancer Center (PVCC) to establish collaborations with scientists in academia and pharma, with the goal of designing clinical trials that maximize the value of the spontaneous cancer model for collaborators while providing benefits of trial participation for companion animals and owners. The PVCC's focus on translational research includes both investigator-driven and sponsored studies. Adjacent to the veterinary hospital are three world-class hospitals and research centers which provide excellent opportunities for collaboration: The Abramson Cancer Center at the Perelman School of Medicine, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and the Wistar Institute, (www.upenn.edu/life-at-penn).


The Veterinary Clinical Investigations Center (http://pennvcic.org) is dedicated to the implementation and management of clinical trials in companion animals. They provide high-quality operational expertise across a wide variety of trial designs. The dedicated VCIC nursing staff is certified in Good Clinical Practice and experienced in supporting trials for both academic and industry partners. The center is advised by faculty with expertise in biostatistics, epidemiology, and clinical trial design.


The Comprehensive Cancer Care service currently consists of 4 board-certified medical oncologists including 1 with a focus on immuno-oncology; 1 board-certified radiation oncologist; 1 board-certified surgeon with a focus on oncology; 4 medical oncology residents; 1 radiation oncology intern; and 1 clinical trials intern. The support staff includes 9 full time nurses and technicians.


Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital is Penn Vet's small animal facility, which houses board-certified faculty in virtually every specialty. Capabilities include interventional radiology, minimally-invasive surgery, hemodialysis and plasmapheresis. Imaging modalities include MRI, CT, Doppler ultrasound, and fluoroscopy. Ryan Hospital is situated on Penn's vibrant main campus in Philadelphia, a beautiful historic city with an abundance of cultural resources including music, art, theatres, and fine dining (www.upenn.edu/life-at-penn/philadelphia).
