Job Description:

Positions are available for day, evening, and night

To develop the framework for an effective staff and student education program to continually improve the knowledge and functioning of Central Processing staff. To review and update sterile processes to ensure the quality and compliance are exceeding internal and external (regulatory) expectations.

Ensures all infection control policies and procedures are strictly enforced. Assists managers to ensure OR/CSS is in full compliance with regulatory agencies such as The Joint Commission, Dept of Public Health, and American Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, AORN standards, etc. Incumbent must have a comprehensive knowledge of all surgical instrumentation used to perform over 30,000 surgical procedures annually.

The job is achieved working under the direction of the Operations Manager performing the following:

  • Communicate and educate the QA and In-Service Trainer on all new Joint Commission, DPH, FDA, CDC, EPA, AORN, AAMI regulatory changes impacting sterile processes and CPD workflow so that the QA and In-Service Trainer can set up the necessary training for staff: Work with QA and In-Service Trainer to:

    • Develop and discuss plan.

    • Prioritize initiatives.

    • Communicate impact of necessary changes to OR leadership.

  • Develop, review and/or update annual CPD staff competencies for job roles defined by manager.

    • Answer questions and assist staff in understanding competencies.

    • Educate new competencies, as necessary.

  • Develop continuing education and training programs for all staff. Annually obtain input from staff and shift supervisors.

    • Establish yearly training calendar, schedule and subject matter.

  • Develop and maintain staff Orientation Program for experienced and/or new hires to CPD, CPD OR, or L&D CPD.

    • Individualize program training depending on job role and experience.

    • Meet with orientees to discuss any related education issues. Follow-up.

    • Maintain a standardized evaluation tool to ensure all employees are in compliance.

  • Oversee student education program. Updating the program to provide exceptional training experience.

    • Liaison with school(s).

    • Meet with students to discuss educational experiences.

    • Meet with supervisors on students schedule and educational plan.

    • Maintain standardized evaluation tool.

    • Review and maintain contract with school(s).

  • Sets the guidelines for Quality and Assurance records.

  • Develop programs in Health stream.

  • Liaison with local, regional and national organizations as well as regulatory agencies to establish resources for current trends and regulations within CPD.

  • Assist as a resource in CPD policy and procedure development or review regarding sterile processes, including workflow, documentation, and storage.

  • Provide consultation to supervisors in resolution of educational, sterile process, compliance issues on L1 and L3.

  • Available to all CPD staff as a resource to guide, mentor, or provide information and/or education on sterile process, and/or regulatory information.

  • Collaborate with Perioperative Nurse Educators to facilitate orientation program for new hires in CPD and Perioperative Nursing - new OR nurses to orient in CPD and new CPD staff to orient in the Operating Room.

  • Provide support to instrument procurement on concerns of sterile processing issues.

  • Serve as a liaison with hospital Infection Control as requested by the hospital or Operations Manager.

  • Serve on any departmental or hospital committees regarding CPD education, sterile processes, compliance, or regulatory concerns, as directed by the Operations Manager.

  • Research new equipment, processes, or programs, as requested, regarding sterile process regulatory requirements.

  • Assist in implementing new CPD processes to support patient and employee safety.

  • Provide leadership through mentorship in sterile processing workflow, compliance and quality programs.

  • Effectively communicate, both written and verbal, with co-workers and staff.

  • Ensure Quality Assurance program for all aspects of CPD is maintained, reviewed, and presented. Includes trending and benchmarking.

  • Available to cover Sterile Processing in BWH ambulatory sites as needed, as well as collaborate as necessary, specifically when regulatory issues are applicable across the continuum of the health care facility.

  • Other duties may be assigned as necessary to facilitate the education of staff, sterile processes, compliance, and regulatory aspects of CPD.

NOTE: This position is not to maintain records of staff and student education and sterilization processes, but to set-up the workflow for that to happen.


Experience working in an OR setting (3-5+ years); Extensive central processing experience (3-5+ years); IAHCSMM Certification Bachelor's degree preferred (or equivalent experience)

  • Ability to work in a hospital environment and deal closely and effectively with a variety of staff (physicians and nurses, infection control practitioners, CPD staff, risk management, administration) up to 100% of work time.

  • Experience with working in OR and CPD environment

  • Requires interpersonal skills necessary to lead, coach and educate others and to work effectively with a wide variety of hospital and outside personnel.

  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office.

Busy, loud, fast paced work setting; exposure to surgical instrumentation and equipment, sterilizers.
