The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

As Supervisor of Software Engineering for the Health Services Platform team, you will supervise a group of software development engineers who define, develop, and support software products and services built using the latest cloud technologies.

Powered by your understanding of the industry and 3M’s technology at a deep level, you will own the technical strategy and the product development plan, working with business leadership to understand the requirements and organize the work into the product roadmap.

You like to document and communicate inside and outside of your team. You love metrics and use the right metrics to continuously improve. You are an avid learner and keep up to date with new technologies and evaluate impact to the organization. You are adept at attracting talent and building high performance teams that deliver high quality solutions.

You are an excellent communicator, able to eliminate jargon when necessary, yet able to dive deep into technical details when working with development staff. You take quality very seriously and work to quantify and evaluate meaningful ways of measuring and reporting on quality.

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Job Responsibilities


  • Lead a team of software engineers and other technical staff in the design and development of modern cloud-based software products, services, and platforms.

  • Lead in all areas of the product delivery lifecycle including requirements management, software architecture, programming, testing, deployment, maintenance, change management, continuous integration, project management, and release management.

  • Champion agile development principles across the technical and business organizations.

  • Set long term as well as sprint level objectives and measure progress against each

  • Define product backlog requirements; prioritize and schedule the work

  • Create an atmosphere of innovation, embracing modern R&D cultures and enabling professional growth for the team.

  • Remove technical impediments which arise.

  • Work successfully in a corporate environment, managing multiple tasks and adapting to evolving priorities.

  • Participate in a leadership capacity on cross-functional teams, delivering on critical programs such as new technology introductions and new product introductions alongside other technology leaders and business leaders.

  • Recruit and hire new software team employees.

  • Provide direct supervision and feedback to employees through daily leadership, coaching, training, and formal written performance reviews.

  • Understand corporate/location policies and procedures and take appropriate action to address policy related issues.

  • Work with external vendor contracting and resources.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Your Skills and Expertise 

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited university OR High School Diploma/GED from an accredited institution and a minimum of fourteen (14) years of experience in software industry in lieu of the bachelor’s degree education requirement

  • Three (7) years of experience building large scale web applications

  • Three (3) years leading and/or growing one or more software development teams

  • Three (3) years using C#, Java, or Python

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:


  • Minimum of Three (3) years of experience building applications in the cloud (AWS, Azure)

  • Experience leading teams in the creation of products and services which utilize a broad variety of AWS services and capabilities.

  • Graduate degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline.

  • Experience building automation to deploy virtual infrastructure, monitoring, alerts, and incident response management.

  • Experience with continuous integration and continuous deployment.

  • Hold certifications in public cloud services such as AWS or Microsoft Azure.

  • Thorough understanding of key security and privacy topics and recommended best practices.

  • Experience using backlog management and issue tracking platforms such as Jira or TFS.

  • Demonstrated experience using agile software development.

  • Experience in establishing coding guidelines and best practices within development teams.

  • Experience with test-first development methodologies such as BDD or TDD.

  • Experience recruiting and hiring new employees.

  • Ability to direct and influence others.

  • Experience managing department finances and budgets.

  • Experience working with external technology partners and workforce providers.

Travel: Occasional travel may be required
