The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) - South Region has a position for a Lead Developmental Services Worker based out of the Public Division, located at the Meriden Transitional Unit in Meriden.

This position is full-time (35 hours per week) on first shift. The schedule is as follows:
Friday - Monday, 6:00 am to 2:45 pm, with regular days off Tuesday-Thursday.
*However, must be flexible in order to meet the needs of the agency.



The Meriden Transitional Unit is a secured, time-limited facility for individuals reentering the community after residing in a secure institutional setting or for individuals who have not been successful in a community-oriented setting. This unit will provide therapeutic environment to address areas of concern, intensive behavioral supports and stabilization while working with teams to develop comprehensive transition plans to an appropriate, long term, community based residential setting.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION:


  • Must have a current valid motor vehicle operator's license

  • Will be required to obtain an F-Endorsement on their driver's license by the completion of the working test period

  • Will be required to travel

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)



In the Department of Developmental Services this class is accountable for acting as a working lead or as a backup to the Supervising Developmental Services Worker in the shift supervision of a work location.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES



Duties consistent with Lead Developmental Services Worker job specification; Oversees and may participate in general care including meal preparation, feeding, clothing and treatment; directs and advises staff on implementation of active treatment strategies; assists in evaluating performance of residential program; implements policies, programs and operational procedures in accordance with state and federal regulations and with regard to needs of individuals; may administer selected oral medications with appropriate training; may complete a variety of reports, notes, logs, requisitions, etc.; may design and write residential living programs; may provide orientation and in-service training to subordinate staff; may order, secure and distribute supplies and equipment; may attend interdisciplinary team meetings; may arrange for appropriate support services; may administer first aid in emergency situations; may serve as backup for Supervising Developmental Services Worker; performs related duties as required.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY



Considerable knowledge of modern methods of working with individuals with intellectual or other developmental disabilities; knowledge of rehabilitative and interdisciplinary process; knowledge of goals, policies and organization of a residential living unit; knowledge of safety, fire and first aid procedures; considerable interpersonal skills; ability to implement policies and operational procedures; ability to lead staff.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE



One (1) year of experience working with individuals with intellectual or other developmental disabilities at the level of Developmental Services Worker 2.



PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS





  • Experience working with individualswith significant behavioral and psychiatric diagnosis

  • Experience communicating with a diverse population through written and oral communication

  • Experience developing positive relationships with clients and coworkers

  • Experience using a modern approach with persons with intellectual/developmental disabilities

  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint



SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS



1. Incumbents in this class may be required to be bilingual or fluent in American Sign Language.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license, Public Passenger Endorsement or Commercial Driver's license for designated positions.
3. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS



Incumbents in this class must possess physical and emotional health for efficient performance of duties. Applicants may be required to take a physical examination.


WORKING CONDITIONS



Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain individuals; may have significant exposure to communicable and/or infectious diseases and to risk of injury from assaultive and/or abusive individuals and may be exposed to strongly disagreeable conditions.
