The Battery Systems Engineer will design, develop, and implement high voltage (HV) battery systems in hybrid and full electric vehicle (EV) applications. The role will execute battery sizing calculations for power and energy demands and design battery mounting and interface guidelines. The Battery Systems Engineer will perform independent project tasks and collaborate with suppliers, customers, and team members. The position is located in Allen Park, MI.

As a Battery Systems Engineer, you will:


  • Interact with customers and Roush internal teams to develop systems level requirements.

  • Perform sizing and safety analysis for battery pack components such as bus-bars, contactors, and fuses.

  • Develop mechanical, electrical and interface product requirements and specifications for energy storage systems based on the application.

  • Lead interactions with suppliers to resolve product development issues.

  • Interact with internal teams for packaging at the vehicle level and provide input for robust mounting and required clearances to adjacent parts.

  • Create component requirements and work with suppliers to ensure requirements are met.

  • Author test procedures and test reports to meet design verification (DV) testing requirements.

  • Perform root cause analysis on tested parts and provide issue resolution.

  • Support vehicle builds by providing hands on help with integration (mechanical, electrical and communication).

  • Create timelines and manage issue lists with internal and external suppliers and customers.

Minimum qualifications to be considered:


  • Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field.

  • Minimum 2 years of product development engineering experience in the automotive industry.

  • Minimum 2 years of experience working with lithium-ion high voltage batteries.

  • Experience with fuses, contactors, relays. and other electrical components.

  • Experience with product development tools such as Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), Design, Failure, Mode & Effect Analysis (DFMEAs), and Design Verification Plan & Report (DVPRs).

  • Working knowledge of best practices related to design and development of high voltage battery systems.

  • Strong computer skills in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Ability to work independently or in team settings.

  • Excellent organizational skills including ability to prioritize work assignments.

A successful candidate may also have:


  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical engineering, or related field.

  • Experience in electrical circuits analysis for power and energy requirements.

  • Experience in HV Building Management Systems (BMS) controls, Controller Area Network (CAN) programming and performance aspects of the HV packs.

  • Experience with electric powertrain components such as HV batteries, DC/DC, motor controls and vehicle level controls.

  • Problem resolution skills in Vehicle Engineering, Control Systems and Software and ability to work with CAN based devices.

  • Electro-mechanically inclined.
