The Tax Manager is responsible for managing a staff dedicated to accurate and timely preparation and filing of federal and state excise tax, sales/use tax, and tax licensing for multiple states, locations and legal entities. The department is also responsible for preparing annual 1099 forms and providing limited support to the Corporate Tax department for income tax preparation.

Tax Manager Responsibilities
Facilitate and manage the preparation and review of federal tobacco/excise tax returns and reports
Ensure compliance with all federal tobacco tax regulations
Ensure accurate, timely filing of state and local excise/tobacco returns and other related filings
Ensure accurate, timely filing of state and local sales/use returns and other business-related filings
Review (non-income) tax returns and tax projections
Research state and federal excise tax, sales tax and licensing requirements
Respond to tax inquiries from government agencies, customers and management
Manage and facilitate federal and state excise tax audits
Manage and facilitate state and local sales/use tax audits
Provide support with various internal audits and special tax related projects
Monitor legislative and regulatory tax law developments, communicate the effects of these developments to management and the tax team and create strategies to capitalize on changes to taxation legislation
Find and implement opportunities for process improvement in company tax procedures
Develop and implement strategic tax planning for all necessary federal and state taxes
Assist the Corporate Tax group with preparing or overseeing the preparation of several supporting workpapers for federal/state income tax filings
Work closely with members of Legal, Corporate Tax, and Government Relations teams to determine proper application of laws to our products and business model(s)
Regularly work with members of the entire organization (including but not limited to Finance, Sales, Business Analytics, Credit, Customer Service, Accounts Payable, Supply Chain and Operations) to collect or provide information and/or guidance for purposes of tax/regulation compliance
Plan for and develop overall return calendar and coordinate timing and inputs with tax team
Maintain effective control procedures over all aspects of the tax process
Manage and mentor members of tax team to greater levels of effectiveness and engagement
Job Requirements
We are looking for a candidate with 5+ years of experience in a tax manager or public accountant role and at least 2 years of experience in a management role. Preferred candidates have a current CPA license and a master's degree in an accounting discipline.
Bachelor's Degree with concentration in Accounting/Business/Finance, Master's Degree a plus
General tax experience preferred, no specific type of tax is required
Management experience
Strong accounting, analytical, and research skills.
Knowledge of compliance and procedures for corporations
Strong ability to utilize project management and accounting best practices to organize and prioritize tasks and the tasks of other tax team members.
Great organizational skills
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Proficient with Microsoft Excel and general office software
Oracle Net Suite experience preferred, but not required
Assist with monthly and annual reporting requirements, including tax return preparation
Other projects and tasks as required

Must be able to work on a computer for prolonged periods of time
Must be able to sit, stand for prolonged periods of time
