Job Description

The Role:

We are looking for a Principal Analyst to join our Global Thermal Research team. This role will be based in Annapolis, Maryland, USA, joining a global team of well-established experts. As part of the Metals and Mining Research Unit, the Thermal Coal team is responsible for delivering comprehensive research coverage of the global thermal coal markets, covering supply, demand, pricing and costs. Wood Mackenzie's high-quality thermal coal research provides value to our clients, by providing a guide to the rapidly transitioning energy sector and assisting clients to make the best commercial decisions to secure their business success.

You will be primarily responsible for coverage of thermal coal markets and supply in the United States.

As part of a world-class team of industry experts, you will conduct original quantitative and qualitative research on the US thermal coal market and deliver analysis through the creation of data services, proprietary data, written reports, public speaking, and custom research engagements. This role will involve modelling the trajectory of the thermal coal market in the long-term. Further, you will work closely with members across the commodities, energy and natural resources business globally to help determine the pace and shape of the energy transition. You will produce regular and timely deliverables about the thermal coal market and supply.

Through your efforts, you will strengthen your and WoodMac's profile, building relationships with senior contacts at key companies and bodies. You will develop a unique perspective and understanding of the thermal coal industry. Your knowledge will be highly valued by WoodMac's clients, with whom you will share your insight via industry-leading written reports, economic models and presentations.

Your contributions will be influential from the beginning. You will be in demand and able to make a difference as we value high levels of client contact and pride ourselves in answering their questions.

Qualifications

About you and how you can excel in this role:

You are degree-qualified in a relevant discipline (Economics, Business, Mining, Geology, Engineering etc.) and have experience in the metals and mining and/or energy sectors. Your previous experience includes generating forecasts for thermal coal or energy supply, demand, prices and trade. You may also have experience with mines, power plants, traders, or other users of thermal coal and experience with their operations.

You also understand the big picture, which enables you to analyse and form clear, coherent conclusions from a variety of data and information. You find it easy to communicate complex or technical information and delivering messages that are easily understood. You thrive in a collaborative, commercial and client-centric environment.

You have a high understanding of the Microsoft Office suite of products. You may have advanced skills utilising these products or programming languages. You have experience with relational databases.

You are thoughtful, intellectually curious, creative and comfortable presenting to public audiences and interacting with small groups of executives.

You have a proven track record of fostering strong working relationships, developing networks and influencing others. The way you work is productive and driven, striving to be the best in class. You often share ideas, find better ways of working and make things happen.
