Job Description:

The Fleet Science Centers Studio X-pert supports the Fleet Mission, Philosophy of Inquiry, and Community-Centered approach byfacilitating playful and inventive educational activities using (STEAM) science, technology, engineering, art, and math in our maker space Studio X. In addition to conducting educational activities in the Studio, the Studio X-pert will also support the make space Supervisor in the organizing and maintaining of inventory, tools and materials. A Studio X-pert also assists in the training, supervision, and scheduling of X-pert volunteers. In this position, you will also have the opportunity to build on the Fleets community centered ideologies, by building relationships and working collaboratively with regional Makers and Maker Organizations for public programs and experiences in Studio X.

Reports to: Studio X Supervisor

Primary Duties and Responsibilities


  1. Cultivate a welcoming and collaborative environment that sparks interest, enthusiasm, and curiosity in STEAM for visitors of all ages.

  2. Engage in reflective conversation aimed at strengthening visitor understanding and creativity.

  3. Organize activities and maintain areas for safety and compliance with museum policies.

  4. Support the Studio X Supervisor with the maintenance and inventory of tools, materials and supplies.

  5. Support the Studio X Supervisor by assiating with the training, supervision, and scheduling of X-pert volunteers.

  6. Work collaboratively across Fleet teams for the development of activities and investigations, program ideas, and special projects.

  7. Implement programming and activities for special events and other weekend programs.

  8. Be knowledgeable of safety and emergency procedures and keep supervisor informed of safety concerns.

Tools and equipment used to perform this position:  Cutting equipment, hot glue gun, assorted power, and manual hand tools. Use of miscellaneous shop equipment including band saw, belt/disk sander, drill press, grinder, jig saw, router, table saw and other equipment will require approval of Shop Manager. 

Experience and skills: 


  • Passion for engaging with visitors of all ages and abilities in an informal science educational setting. 

  • Ability to work in crowded noisy atmosphere, standing and/or walking for entire shift. 

  • Ability to exude charisma in and environment that can go from calm to chaos and back to calm.  

  • Ability to multi-task.  

  • An ideal candidate is creative, enthusiastic, and open to new ideas and displays empathy when engaging with customers and colleagues to turn challenges into opportunities.  

  • Experience with large group presentations and/or public speaking.

  • Effective in person and written communication skills with diverse groups of people.  

  • Willingness to work weekend shifts and special events

  • General knowledge of hand tools.

  • General knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

  • Experience developing or delivering programs for people of all ages and abilities, including family groups, school groups, and/or adults is A Plus.  

  • Fabrication ability and materials’ knowledge in wood, metals and other media is a Plus.  

  • Skills with filming and editing digital media is a Plus.  

Supervision, direction, or guidance provided for this position:  Position performs daily duties under direct supervision. Supervision required to provide scheduling, set priorities, train on new responsibilities, and monitor work.

Physical Requirements of this Position:

Medium Work:  Position involves ability to frequently or constantly exert up to 20 pounds of force and occasionally exert up to 50 pounds of force to move objects.

Business Location Presence:  This position requires physical presence at the business location during all assigned working hours in order to adequately perform all duties.
