Purpose

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. The Chemical Process Scale Up Group in the Manufacturing Science Division is seeking to hire a nationally recognized expert in chemical engineering to perform research on clean energy systems that enable renewable fuels and sustainable transportation. In this position you will conduct research at ORNL's state-of-the-art laboratories that support manufacturing and transportation research. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with teams with diverse staff across ORNL as well as researchers at other national labs, industry, and universities.

In this position you will address research challenges in the scale-up and development of novel clean energy systems and should have demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas:: (1) carbon capture systems based on amine or ionic liquid solution adsorption, (2) carbon capture systems based on solid material sorbents, (3) chemical systems for catalytic conversion of gases or alcohols to higher C-content and lower O-content fuels, (4) systems for efficient and safe compression and storage of H2 and CO2, and (5) efficient power generation technologies. Of particular interest is the combination of modeling and experimental approaches for a comprehensive understanding of the science fundamentals in these systems. All of these research areas support the overall goal of clean sustainable transportation for U.S. energy security.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

- Conduct pioneering research in applied chemistry and chemical engineering to address challenges for scale-up of renewable fuel production, CO2 capture, and utilization of CO2 for sustainable products

- Lead projects and tasks in a dynamic research environment with diverse technical teams

- Present and report research results in high-impact peer reviewed journals, conferences and project reviews

- Write and submit research and development proposals

Qualifications Required

- A M.S. or PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or an equivalent disciplinewith a minimum of 10 years' experience

- Hands-on experience in the design, construction, and research of prototype systems for clean energy

- In-depth experience in model development and validation for scale up of complex systems

- A record of excellence in research as evidenced through peer-reviewed journal publications, patents, industry impact, and/or professional society participation
