Job Description:

Experience and Education


  • Two (2) year Associate\'s degree or equivalent experience required.

  • Four year college degree preferred.

  • Four (4) years of job related experience in a health care setting to include two years interpretation experience with use of medical terminology and excellent customer service skills.

  • Must speak, read, and write English and target language fluently.

  • Ability to translate accurately written materials between English and the target language.

  • May have an equivalent combination of education and experience to substitute for the experience requirements as well as possess the Medical Interpreter National Certification (NBCMI or CCHI).

  • Medical Interpreter National Certification by an NCAA accredited organization required.

  • 48-hour Healthcare or Community interpreter training on Bilingual Medical Terminology and Physiology required.

  • Must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of personal computers, job related software programs and standard office equipment.

  • Prior to employment must successfully complete the UTSW Language Services language/medical terminology proficiency exam in English and a second target language with a minimum score of 85%.

Job Duties

1. Must be able to speak, read and write both English and a second language. Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with patients, families, and hospital staff. Must be able to accurately interpret basic medical and health care information/instructions from physicians, nurses or other health care staff for patients/families as well as accurately interpret questions and/or concerns from patients/families to physicians, nurses or health care staff. Must be able to support communication for intermediate to advanced medical procedures using appropriate medical terminology and interpret accurately for highly specialized areas of service.

2. Translate consent forms, discharge orders, teaching protocols, and similar from English to target language(s); assist in obtaining patients/families signature where appropriate; Provides information regarding health care related cultural issues/needs of limited English proficient patients/families to hospital staff in order to develop sensitivity. Demonstrates high skills and expertise in document translation for English/Spanish with correct spelling, grammar and syntax; uses medical online and hard copy dictionaries and healthcare databases.

3. Ethical Behavior: Must adhere to the NCIHC Medical Interpreter Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. Must be able to demonstrate patient centered behaviors with a focus on responding quickly to calls for language services. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to serve patients, families, clinicians and physicians.

4. Assist with varying departmental activities and projects as requested; and perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

5. Keep an accurate list of encounters and enter this information by the end of each shift using the UTSW Language Services Department electronic interpreter log.

6. Document in EPIC all daily patient sessions, including University hospitals, hospital based and ambulatory clinics in an accurate and timely manner.

7. Ability to meet physical and non-physical demands as outlined in the job description is an essential function of the job. Proactively search for ways to improve service. Other Duties: Performs other duties as assigned.
