Location Profile


The New Hartford and Dunkirk facilities in New York are industry leaders in the production of premium quality nickel base superalloys for both static and rotating aerospace and land-based gas turbine applications. Our facilities are accredited to the most recent release of the rigorous Aerospace Standard, AS9100 Revision D. Our Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) furnace is our primary melting process, and at 45,000 pounds capacity makes it among the largest in the world. In addition to servicing cast and wrought billet applications, we also produce premium-quality re-melt alloys for powder applications. SMC's cold finishing facility includes conditioning equipment for billet and bar surface preparation (ground or peeled). Billet and bar surfaces are finished to meet all varieties of customer specifications and inspection criteria. SMC conducts a variety of non-destructive tests on our product including penetrant inspection and contact and immersion sonic inspection to ensure compliance to all of our customer specifications. Our C-scan immersion sonic inspection system for billet is among the newest in the world.




Position Summary


The Quality Assurance Engineer position is a customer sensitive, critical function supporting multiple processes within the Quality Department. This individual is expected to create and transmit material "certificates of test". In addition, this individual will be expected to support the melt review process, which requires some professional judgment and a limited use and/or application of basic principles, theories, and concepts.

Certifications and melt reviews must be completed in an accurate and timely fashion to meet all internal and customer requirements. These processes must be completed to support the requirements of SMC shipping schedules. Certifications include chemistries, mechanical properties, conformance to fixed practices, metallographic ratings, billet maps, and various other forms of documentation needed to confirm the material meets specification requirements. As a result, the Quality Assurance Engineer must develop a proficient understanding of the entire manufacturing process, material specifications, material testing, and the systems used to convey and retain processing information.






Primary Duties & Responsibilities



  • Review all records and specifications for certification requests by customers. This includes chemistry, mechanical test results, metallographic results, material processing methods, vendor agreements, method of manufacture, process outlines, purchase orders (P.O.), QA checklists, and inspection records.

  • Create a certificate of test for each customer shipment. Record accurately on the certification all test data, specification references, required quality statements, material descriptions, identification numbers, and any additional requirements flowed down by the purchase order. Initiate action to correct erroneous results when found and maintain appropriate records for permanent retention files.

  • Audit customer certifications for compliance with all purchase order requirements.


  • QA checklist for vendor agreement compliance, process outlines, methods of manufacture.

  • Review disposition of Variances and IRR'S

  • Initiate Non-conformance requests as necessary

  • Review Inspection records for quality requirements and completeness as required (macro results, UT requirements, proper size and tolerances, length requirements, weight requirements, and any customer samples required.)

  • Verify accuracy of billet maps (# of sonic defects, location of defects, weight loss requirements, UT sonic test requirements)

  • Sign completed Certification

  • Forward certification and packing slip to Production Control

  • Mail/ Fax/E-mail/ certification to customer

  • File as appropriate for permanent retention

  • Interface as needed with customer


  • Input customer specification information into electronic "test plan" system and maintain the system as specifications are added or updated.

  • Participate with the contract review process to determine at the time of quotation or order entry that all customer requirements can be achieved, all current specifications are on file and reviewed, and if any exceptions are needed that they are documented, forwarded to the customer and a documented approval is granted if the order is taken.

  • Participate in specific customer qualification programs:

  • Initiate and participate in continuous process improvement projects and assignments.

  • Analyze VIM/ESR/VAR/Anneal charts and records.

  • Check to make sure all VAR/ESR sequence numbers and heat numbers are present and consistent on all charts and records.

  • Check to make sure all charts conform to applicable internal procedures.

  • Run the SMC Post Processor on the data from each record (when applicable).

  • Perform calculations for material removal when necessary.

  • Create Internal Review Reports when required and answer any Variances associated with the records, consulting the Process Engineers when necessary.

  • Input data into Oracle and TIS.

  • Prepare each record for record retention and storage.

Various other duties as assigned by supervisor.






Experience & Education



  • A minimum of an Associate's degree in a Technical, Science or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. At least 1 year of manufacturing or lab experience in the aerospace materials industry is preferred.

  • Up to two years of experience in a Quality role or function is also preferred.

  • Employee must be able to demonstrate core certification function within 6 months of employment.






Required Skills



  • Computer literacy is a requirement.

  • Must be able to perform basic certification functions within 3 months of employment.

  • Ability to interface with any person in the organization, but also to work independently.

  • Organizational skills and attention to detail are critical.

  • Reliable attendance and good communication skills are essential.

  • Ability to work in a high-pressure environment and flexibility under changing priorities.
