Spec Engineering is seeking a difference maker to join our team as a client-facing Controls Engineerwho is the definition of detail oriented.This person's talent is tomanage the controls aspect of all assigned projects from start to finish including maintaining project timelines, scheduling, and coordinating with departments and contractors involved.

Essential Duties and responsibilities:


  • Designs systems of electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic controls for machines, equipment, and systems utilizing knowledge of computer-aided design and applying knowledge of electricity, electronics, hydraulics, and pneumatics.

  • Utilizes knowledge of electrical engineering and drafting to design and draft components of electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, and lubrication devices, and other related equipment.

  • Confers with VP of Engineering, Director of Automation and Project Managers in the Engineering department to review functions of systems and equipment.

  • Collaborate with all engineers for proper component and instrument selection to satisfy the needs of the project, application, and budget. Present opportunities for non-budget items that would result in cost savings or added value in process or operation. Report inconsistencies in budget to PM’s so they can be rectified with decisions or change orders to keep project budgets on track

  • Production of approval drawings for customer review prior to production. Proper planning to keep projects moving forward per the schedule and balance between multiple projects

  • Manage the controls and electrical portions of all assigned Spec projects with responsibility for maintaining schedules and budgets and working closely with the project manager and other disciplines to ensure that each project meets or exceed our customer’s expectations.

  • Works with members of engineering, assembly, and contractors to oversee the controls portions of projects with a focus on improving functionality, meeting and exceeding customer expectations and providing options for value engineering of controls systems.

  • Relies on experience, judgment, facts, and data to plan and accomplish goals.

  • Responsible for the safe and efficient design of all systems ensuring that each project meets all applicable local, state and federal electrical codes and safety guidelines.

  • Must be motivated and self-directed to accomplish a variety of tasks as required, as assigned and as necessary.

  • Problem Solving - Develops alternative solutions when necessary. Gathers and analyzes information skillfully. Identifies problems in a timely manner and develops realistic and creative solutions. Resolves problems in early stages and over-communicates to ensure all internal and external stakeholders are aware of plans to resolve issues. Works well on teams and in group problem solving situations.

RequiredEducation/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or similar field.

  • 3-5 years of experience in controls and automation role.

  • Experience in an OEM environment is preferred.

  • Detailed programming capability in Allen Bradley PLC Logic.

  • Factory Talk HMI programming ability.

  • A working knowledge in the use of AutoCAD.

  • An ability to design and develop electrical schematics for control panel construction.

  • A working knowledge of the following systems is not required but considered a plus:
    • Wonderware, Siemens, PLC5 and Automation Direct
