Job Description:

JPMorgan Chase Institute:

The JPMorgan Chase Institute is a global think tank dedicated to delivering data-rich analyses and expert insights for the public good. The mission of the JPMorgan Chase Institute is to help decision makers - policymakers, businesses, and nonprofit leaders - appreciate the scale, granularity, diversity, and interconnectedness of the global economic system and timely data and thoughtful analysis to make more informed decisions that advance prosperity for all.

Position Overview:

The JPMorgan Chase Institute seeks a Summer 2021 Intern to work closely with researchers exploring Financial Health and Wealth Inequality, leveraging JPMorgan Chase data assets in building out an integrated view of wealth and financial behavior of households. The ideal candidate will possess superior skills in quantitative social science techniques, econometrics, and data science methodologies, experience in conducting empirical data analysis and in writing modular / reusable code to manage large data sets (e.g. millions of records), and have an entrepreneurial and proactive mindset.

Researchers at the Institute split their time between building analytical data assets and generating quantitative insights. Our underlying data is highly granular, frequently transaction-level, meaning that most statistical analyses in our data require substantial preparation work. A successful intern will participate on both sides-i.e., data building and econometric analysis-of our research process.

The hiring team's current research agenda includes projects that will provide unique, data-driven perspectives on the connections between household financial outcomes and both economy-wide and household-specific shocks. In addition, we are actively developing our insight into household financial wealth to support ongoing research themes, including wealth effects on consumption and inequality analysis.

Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct original research and literature reviews to support the Institute's ongoing research agenda and articulate the value-add to topical debate
  • Work alongside analysts/associates, Research Directors, academic advisors, and internal thought-leaders to develop and conduct analyses, using Institute data alone or in combination with existing publicly-available data, that add to both the public and academic discourse
  • Attend, participate, and present synthesized research findings at weekly problem solving sessions
  • Pull and analyze relevant third-party datasets to support ongoing research initiatives
  • Identify promising potential topics for the Institute's research agenda
  • Explore and enhance data visualization tools to effectively convey research findings

Candidate Qualifications

  • Current Masters student with experience using quantitative methods to study household wealth (e.g. Economics, Finance); PhD candidates also welcome to apply
  • Experience with Scala, Python, and / or SQL preferred
  • Experience with distributed Hadoop platform tools (e.g. Spark, Hive) and collaboration tools (git, Jira) is a plus
  • Technical expertise in statistical methods including: outcome measurement, causal inference, weighting, clustering, and machine learning.
  • Strong training in econometrics, especially time series econometrics
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; ability to synthesize and present compact research topics
  • Creativity, discretion, and a commitment to intellectual rigor
  • Initiative taker who can efficiently explore promising research areas and absorb and synthesize large amounts of information and data quickly
  • Team-player able to work in a small, high performing, and collaborative environment, often at a fast pace and under time constraints; comfort with uncertainty and an entrepreneurial working context
