OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

This position will fill a key role in managing all finance and administrative elements of the Count Me In (CMI) research portfolio and its major funding sources. Reporting to the Senior Advisor to the Chief Financial Officer with a strong tie to the Count Me In Director, the Finance Manager will be an integral member of this initiative and the Broad Institute community.

About Count Me In

Count Me In is a nationwide research initiative that engages patients via social media and advocacy groups and empowers them to accelerate cancer research by sharing their samples, clinical information, and experiences to help reveal patterns in clinical, genomic, molecular, and patient reported data that could lead to breakthroughs in our understanding of cancer, ultimately leading to new treatments. Over the next several years, Count Me In will be launching new patient-partnered cancer research projects. Ensuring successful projects across strategically selected disease areas that lead to scientific discoveries will be essential for the organization's success and for advancing biomedical research and improving cancer care. Count Me In also aims to further develop the concept of patient-partnered research in cancer by developing best practices; facilitating patients' ability to share their medical records; developing strategies that enable patients anywhere to participate in research; creating computational and laboratory infrastructure to support projects led by others; convening researchers engaged in such projects; and engaging in outreach to the public about such projects.

The Successful Candidate

We are looking for an intellectually curious, creative problem solver with financial expertise, excellent organizational skills, and experience in research finance and operations who will partner with initiative leadership to oversee all day-to-day finances thus ensuring successful research outcomes in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. The successful candidate will be analytical, quick-thinking, flexible with a strong emphasis on organizational skills, excellent communication skills, and an unwavering attention to detail. He/she will be conversant in the goals and priorities of the Count Me In initiative and will utilize this knowledge to prioritize tasks and responsibilities.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

Financial


  • Prepares financial reporting, including ad hoc requests and answers questions related to the general financial status of Count Me In financial reporting for the initiative's leadership and major funding sponsors for the initiative. Develops reporting to meet various stakeholder needs.


  • Develops and recommends financial structures to accommodate proper oversight of Count Me In's operations.


  • Primary liaison and financial coordinator of the overall portfolio for the Count Me In initiative. This role will also coordinate all financial reporting requirements of the major funding sources supporting the initiative.


  • Leads budget preparation, including financial portions as well as budget justifications for all research grant proposals.


  • Supports the development of periodic forecasts and develops and maintains financial models for strategic planning.


  • Oversees overall budgets and monitors actual spending to ensure it is in line with the Director's research objectives and resource decisions. Reviews and validates financial transactions, some of which are complex due to the financial structure of the initiative.


  • Primary point of contact for all personnel costs and effort allocations, billing agreements, subawards, and shared service center quoting and expenses via detailed reports and projections to comply with research goals; partners with the Office of Sponsored Research for execution.


  • In partnership with senior managers, coordinates with Broad's administration to resolve issues as they arise.


Administrative


  • Maintains the roster of personnel affiliated with the initiative and manages employment and appointment processes in coordination with human resources and academic affairs.


  • Understands all the projects within the initiative portfolio and can serve as a thought partner to initiative leadership in long-term budget planning and resource decisions.


  • Serves as point of contact for the investigators collaborating with Count Me In and serves as coordinator of all financial information from these scientific collaborators.


  • Acts as a point of contact with the Broad Institute Office of Sponsored Research, Development Office, and the Office of Strategic Alliances and Partnering for the submission of all research proposals and the development of financial/scientific reports to sponsors. In addition, the position serves as a point of contact with the Development Offices from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and other collaborating institutions.


  • Acts as a key point of contact for all Broad administrative offices (e.g., finance, human resources, and academic affairs) in order to facilitate support for research operations.


  • Facilitates cross-institutional communication and administration among the Broad, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and other collaborating institutions.


  • Works with Broad's Development office to support donor relations activities for major funding sponsors of the initiative.


Compliance


  • Understands any compliance issues associated with various forms of funding and ensures they are met.


  • Fully appreciates research compliance issues and coordinates that all are in place prior to the initiation of projects.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED

  • Coordinates and influences the participation of Faculty, Administration and Staff at all levels in executing on Count Me In's collaborative projects. The right candidate will be ready to assume supervisory responsibilities with CMI growth.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Undergraduate degree required; must be in Accounting or Finance in the absence of relevant work experience. Advanced degree in Business and/or CPA is a plus.

Experience


  • 6 to 8 years of experience in an industry or academic research environment, including experience managing research projects, finances, or sponsored research administration.


  • Proven ability to build relationships with collaborators and influence without direct supervisory authority and proactively anticipate, identify, and mitigate potential issues before they arise.


  • Strong ability to work both independently and collaboratively with an emphasis on strong problem-solving skills.


  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced rapidly changing environment.


  • Expert level of experience with financial analysis, financial reporting, and accounting concepts to support the initiative's financial structure.


  • Demonstrated expertise in Excel and the knowledge or ability to master Broad systems including but not limited to, Workday, SAP, Huron Grants, and Concur.


  • Preferred intermediate knowledge of not for profit research administration; grant/contract submission, monitoring and reporting.


  • Preferred a minimum of at least 2-years' experience in research compliance (can be a combination of compliance, financial, and legal).
