Position Overview:
The Finance Manager is a senior-level position within WestEd's Finance Department reporting to the Director of Finance. The Finance Manager is responsible for supporting the Director of Finance and WestEd by managing the Finance team, collaborating with other infrastructure departments (Accounting, Contracts, Institutional Development, HR, etc.) and divisions to help coordinate and direct WestEd's day-to-day administrative operations.


The Finance Manager is also responsible for a variety of financial and project management activities related to strategic business decisions across WestEd's departments and divisions. The responsibilities include financial reporting, financial analysis and modeling, budget management and development, and navigating financial systems/applications. This position is responsible for overseeing organizational and project budgeting, Executive- and Board-level financial reporting and ad hoc projects, and management of various cross-departmental and strategic projects.


Candidates with an interest in applying corporate business practices to the non-profit sector within an organization whose mission is to improve the educational systems that serve children and families will appreciate this position.


Responsibilities:



  • Manage WestEd's Finance team and ensure the agency stays financially healthy and compliant.

  • Provide key information to leadership to drive business decisions, identify issues and opportunities for continuous quality improvement. Design, create, prepare, and analyze complex financial reports and models including variance and trend analysis, consolidated reporting and analysis across the organization.

  • Work with the Finance team to optimize and streamline financial reporting and data analysis to highlight key business components in support of WestEd's strategic, operational, and financial goals.

  • Work collaboratively with the Finance & Operations staff across WestEd's divisions and departments to evaluate existing business processes and recommend improvements to increase accuracy, gain efficiency and establish consistency.

  • Develop agency's infrastructure budget which incorporates proposals from departmental budget managers and then present compiled model to the Executive Team with information on scenarios, options, and recommendations for creating approved budget.

  • Oversee the agency's monthly forecasting process.

  • Oversee and manage the development of all agency project budgets.

  • Improve and refine WestEd's processes, policies and procedures, particularly related to budgeting and financial activities.

  • Lead high stakes, highly visible agency wide projects.


SPECIAL NOTICE REGARDING THE WORK LOCATION OF THIS POSITION - Currently, all staff at WestEd are working from home until further notice. Once we return to offices, this position will be based in one of WestEd's offices. Candidates can submit a request to work from home.


Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree or higher in related field and 10+ years of relevant work experience.

  • Proven history of effectively leading and managing staff and achieving successful results benefiting the organization.

  • Strong project management skills and experience, including reviewing and improving business practices and processes.

  • Ability to structure and perform complex financial models and data queries to support strategic business planning, financial-based decisions and practices with adherence to WestEd financial policies and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) through the use of various tools.

  • Strong skills and experience with enterprise financial planning and reporting tools.

  • Must be accurate, detailed-oriented and yet be able to view financial information from a broad organizational perspective.

  • Demonstrated professional maturity and organizational political astuteness combined with tact, diplomacy, common sense, sound judgment and confidentiality.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to work in a diverse work environment and various levels of management.

  • Must be a strong individual contributor as well as an effective team member and project leader.

  • Must be a self-starter, an independent thinker, action-oriented and self-motivated.

  • Customer service attitude and approach to working with internal/organizational clients as well as external parties.

  • Fluency and expert-level skill with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

  • Experience with Adaptive Insights and Cognos reporting software a plus.

  • Familiarity and experience with federal OMB Uniform Guidance and federal contracts and contracting rules / regulations a plus.
