The Need

After twenty years of successful programming, IJM has a strong portfolio of innovative and impactful justice reform programs that protect people from violence. As IJM continues to grow, it is seeking two senior staff to lead its research work in forced labor/slavery (FL/S) and violence against women & children (VAW/C) crimes. These people will have excellent technical skills, be proficient at collaboration across teams, understand on-the-ground realities, and drive toward ethical, valuable, and ground-breaking research work. They will serve as leaders for IJM’s FL/S and VAW/C research portfolios and IJM’s and partners’ research staff.

This position is based remotely or at IJM Headquarters in the Washington, DC area and reports to the Global Vice President, Program Quality & Measurement

Responsibilities



  • Develop and drive research agenda: Collaborate with global, regional, and program staff to agree a research agenda centered on issues critical to program success;


  • Provide technical leadership: Provide technical services to prioritized research studies and other data- and learning-related projects and initiatives. Be a source of expertise on approach, methodology, sampling, and other salient issues;


  • Lead research dissemination: Develop an approach to research dissemination. Find, develop, and engage in opportunities to represent IJM’s research work, insights, and results. Increase key stakeholders’ confidence in IJM as a leader in the justice reform space;


  • Embed research standards, guidance, and processes: Develop, launch, mainstream, and ensure the continued relevance and value of research standards, guidance, and processes across the organization. Support adoption through training, reviews, and communication;


  • Develop the global research team: Develop feasible initiatives to support the professional development of the global research team.  Support regions and programs to hire, retain, and use professional research staff and consultants effectively;


  • Ensure quality improvement: Develop, launch, mainstream, and ensure the relevance and value of mechanisms to assess and improve the quality of research work across IJM.

Requirements:


  • Minimum 8 years of relevant research experience including research design, methodology, and implementation to success, experimental and quasi-experimental designs, VAW/C or FL/S issues, principal investigator/lead researcher roles, and field research on the ground in one of IJM’s main program areas (Africa, Latin America, South Asia, or Southeast Asia);

  • Proven ability to apply knowledge of current and emerging FL/S or VAW/C research Proven ability to apply knowledge of current and emerging FL/S or VAW/C research methods to specific research studies;

  • Able to spot and seize opportunities to innovate;

  • Proven ability to accommodate real-world operating conditions into research designs and plans with ability to move forward absent ideal conditions;

  • Track record of providing valuable and actionable research insights to teams;

  • Track record of effective communication to executive, technical, and non-technical audiences alike;

  • Experience working successfully across teams, especially in a matrix-like structure;

  • Experience in training, coaching, mentoring, and supporting research staff;

  • Experience authoring and publishing peer-reviewed academic research and presenting at conferences and industry events;

  • Experience organizing policy/communication events as well as producing policy resources and publications;

  • Proven commitment to upholding ethical research standards; and

  • Graduate degree in any discipline; evidence of training in research methods.
